Thick, spicy, concentrated and very complex, with powerful meaty, gamey aromas and briary cassis/plum fruit at the thoroughly ripened and pruney end of the spectrum. Cooked, quite jammy and tarry, tending to porty and soaking up a lot of mocha oak. Not of usual standard.
Prompted by a response from the maker, I took another look at this wine and arrived at the conclusion that the first bottle I opened and reviewed was affected to a minor extent by random oxidation – a major risk when buying (and reviewing) wine. This bottle indicates the new Armagh is a very ripe, but bright and balanced expression of shiraz made in the higher alcoholic end of the spectrum. There’s vibrant dark plum, raspberry and cassis fruit throughout nose and palate, with meaty, chocolate oak and a velvet-smooth yet powerful grip. It’s lightly tarry and gamey, and unquestionably highly spirited, but has the fruit concentration required to thrive and prosper.
Rather thick, meaty and pruney shiraz with a tarry, menthol-like aroma of sweet vanilla oak, currants and licorice. It’s velvet-smooth and finely crafted, but the thick layers of ultra-ripe and dehydrated fruit tend to lack freshness and vitality. It relies excessively on its tightly integrated creamy vanilla oak for palate sweetness, while some slightly greenish notes lurk beneath the lingering finish.
Sumptuous, ripe and spirity, this powerful but smooth and pliant shiraz is a fine example of its kind. Densely packed with black, briary flavours of plums, cassis and currants, it’s meaty and briary, with an assertive underswell of dark chocolate oak and a massive, but balanced extract of assertive tannin. Laced with suggestions of cracked pepper, cinnamon and cloves, mint and menthol, it’s slightly overcooked but not at the expensive of its considerable longevity.
