1965 Grange is still alive and kicking. It’s everything you’d hope for from an old Grange, and retains its richness, structure and fruit weight, despite its wonderful expression of polished leather, chocolate and cigarboxes. While it’s unlikely to improve further, it’s not about to fall apart.
A great wine at the peak of its form. Complex cigarboxy scents of seared meats, polished leather, cassis and spicy, earthy undertones reveal nuances of dark plums and cherries and bonfire smoke. ItÕs smooth and sumptuous, with an uncompromising depth of power and richness despite its relatively low alcoholic strength. For that itÕs still finely integrated and tightly balanced, with a great length of fruit underpinned by firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing with a lingering core of fruit and nutty, savoury influences. A classic.
Developed, smoky aromas of chocolate, prune and camphor reveal underlying aromas of blackberries and dark cherries, herbal notes, cedar and walnut. Medium to fullish in weight, it’s quite polished but a little spiky, showing its genuine maturity.
