Rich, assertive and powerfully constructed, this firm Riserva-styled sangiovese is fine, deeply ripened, drying and astringent. ItÕs heady and floral, with jujube-like scents of raspberries, raisins and liqueur chocolates with briary undertones of smoke and suede leather. Rich, earthy and meaty, itÕs powerfully structured with a fresh cut of acidity that punctuates its lingering sour-edged presence of plums and blueberries.
Ultra-rich, and likely to develop almost unnatural power and weight for this variety. Meaty, briary and brambly, its smoky aromas of dark plums, cherries, bitumen and beetroot overlie scents of black cherries and baked earth. Its sumptuous, palate-staining presence of sour-edged fruit knit tightly with fine, chalky tannins, finishing with genuine length and a fresh, tight acidity.
A spicy, moderately intense bouquet of small berries is backed by a dusty note of dried herbs. ItÕs long, lean and marginally green-edged, with a slightly angular but juicy presence of raspberries, red cherries, blackberries and red berries overlying a fine, powdery backbone. Finishing marginally sweet-sour, with fresh acids and some herbal edges, itÕs not emphatically varietal, and is perhaps slightly under and over-ripened.
Smooth and spicy, this polished and fine-grained red has a dusty, floral but deeply ripened bouquet of blueberries, blackberries and dark cherries slightly overawed by assertive oak. ItÕs marginally baked but long and supple, with fiery layers of red berries, blood plums and blackberries underpinned by dusty tannins, finishing with a hint of polished leather, fresh acids and a fine astringency.
A spicy, distinctively Penfolds wine whose intense, spicy and floral bouquet of dark cherries, plums and blackberries eases against a background of older oak. Underpinned by fine, crunchy tannins, itÕs long and measured, with juicy cherry/plum flavours extending towards a lingering finish of gentle acidity, licorice and a tomatoey note.
Lightly grassy, with a dusty, waxy perfume of gooseberries, lychees and melon backed by a suggestion of oak, this supple and creamy sauvignon blanc finishes clean and focused, with a powdery texture, nutty influences and refreshing acidity. Initially quite juicy, it becomes long and restrained, with some smart dumbing down of the grape’s more obvious qualities.
A genuinely varietal tempranillo with pleasing weight and character. Heady, tarry aromas of wild briary blueberries, dark plums, blackberries, stonefruit and chocolate are backed by floral notes, vanilla/cedary oak and spicy suggestions of licorice. Its sumptuous and dark-fruited palate of deeply layered jujube-like fruit and chocolatey and meaty fruit nuances is underpinned by a firm spine of fine, pliant tannins. It finishes long, smooth and savoury, with lingering notes of deep, bloody fruit, spice and chocolate.
