Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Sweet, jammy and slightly baked aromas of mulberries, redcurrants, cassis and assertive vanilla oak reveal meaty, caramel and popcorn-like undertones. Fine and restrained, the palate’s slightly dilute expression of currants, plums and cassis is framed by firmish tannin, finishing with hints of rawness and some green edges. It slowly opens to reveal more depth and sweetness of fruit and cedary oak.

A stunning return to form for one of Australia’s most significant cabernet labels. Its dusty and complex fragrance of sweet cassis, cranberries, black olives, dark plums and fine-grained vanilla and walnut-like oak reveals a distinctive heady and floral quality, with undertones of rosemary and cedar. Firm and mouthfilling, it’s long and smooth, beautifully structured and deeply fruited with well-ripened varietal flavours of blackberries, mulberries and dark plums framed by firm but pliant tannins. Newish oak adds texture and structure, while nuances of mint, cedar and undergrowth contribute to its appealing complexity. It has balance, elegance and cellaring potential aplenty.

A very good red from a difficult season. Lightly smoky and cedary, its vibrant bouquet of cassis, mulberries, dark plums and cigarboxes overlies nuances of violets, dark chocolate, mint and baked earth. Plush, smooth and sumptuous, its intense expression of fruit has a slightly cooked and currant-like aspect, but finishes with pleasing freshness. Surprisingly elegant, it’s supported by supple, fine-grained tannins.

A ripe, assertive cabernet whose profound expression of jujube-like blackberry, plum and raisin-like fruit has received some handsome treatment in smoky chocolate/vanilla oak. Supported by a crunchy cut of drying astringency, itÕs backed by suggestions of mint and menthol. While it takes time to open fully, it steadily reveals more length, depth of dark fruit and smoothness of texture.

A restrained, elegant cabernet whose confiture-like spread of blackberry, mulberry, cassis and cranberry flavours are backed by dusty, herbal influences and fragrant smoky dark chocolate/mocha and vanilla oak. ItÕs scented with violets and while its fruit perhaps lacks a little freshness, it is indeed present along the length of its fine, drying and bony palate, where it finishes with pleasing intensity. The wine shows a hint or two of being slightly overcooked, and its oak is slightly angular. For the medium term.

Luscious, concentrated and handsomely oaked, with some evidence of stressed fruit. Lifted by the scent of
violets, its sweet, fresh and smoky bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries sports newish vanilla/cigarbox oak influences and dusty, herbal undertones. Its plush, smooth and juicy presence of cassis, mulberries and plums is supported by a fine, supple backbone, finishing with pleasing length but also with currant-like and herbal notes.

Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

Explosively intense cassis-like fruit combines with fine-grained oak to deliver length and depth aplenty, but with a faint herbal underswell. Backed by nuances of minerals and dried herbs, its briary bouquet of mulberries, Ribena, dark plums and cherries knits with sweet chocolate/cedar oak. ItÕs long, smooth and brightly lit, with deeply concentrated fruit and vanilla oak underpinned by dusty, fractionally sappy tannins that become more crunchy with breathing, finishing with excellent length and just a hint of currant-like flavour. While itÕs a little too greenish to open now, IÕm confident in the cellaring potential of this wine.

Herbaceous aromas of tinned capsicum and asparagus reveal underlying scents of cassis and dark plums knit with cedar/chocolate/vanilla oak. Its forward presence of blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberries and briar is plush and juicy, supported by fine, cedary oak and a firm, crunchy spine, although it does finish with raw, greenish dms-like edges.

Very stylish and elegant, with a dusty, cedary bouquet of small red and black berries, mulberries and a delicate scent of violets backed by nuances of dried herbs. ItÕs long and tightly knit, medium to full in weight, with an even presence of bright, evenly ripened fruit seamlessly entwined with stylish oak and a fine, dusty spine of drying tannins, extending with harmony and focus towards a finish of mouthwatering acidity.

A more herbal expression of cabernet whose delicate floral perfume reveals dark plums, cassis and red cherries lifted by floral and menthol-like scents and a hint of bell pepper. ItÕs smooth and supple Ð an elegant, ultra fine-grained cabernet whose intense flavours of small berries, dark cherries and plums open up very slowly, revealing a fine, powdery structure, a charming length and an acidity that will lose its greenish edges with time on the bottle.

Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A plush, ripe but artfully balanced and structured cabernet whose dusty, cedary bouquet of cassis, mulberries, dark plums and fresh new French oak reveals a whiff of dried herbs. Supported by a firm spine of fine, gravelly tannins, itÕs poised and polished, with a core of evenly ripened fruit extending with exceptional length and drive towards a measured finish of refreshing acidity. A really smart wine and the best under this label since 2002.
