Round and meaty, with surprising richness, balance and structure from this vintage. Its floral perfume of cassis, raspberries, dark plums and fresh cedar/vanilla oak reveals earthy and iodide-like undertones. Supported by fine, sandpapery tannins beneath a long, briary and sweetly fruited presence of blackberries, cassis and dark plums knit with chocolatey oak, it finishes with impressive depth and length.

Old school, firm and mineral; smoky, graphite-like dark fruits, measured oak and sinewy tannins; finishes long and savoury. Now beginning to soften and show some pleasingly meaty, leathery development and more approachability.

d’Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2002
    Jeremy’s score 87/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Rather an essay in levels of reduction, this exceptionally pungent grenache has a meaty, farmyard-like bouquet with more than a mere suggestion of the outhouse. The palate is better, with plenty of bright plum and raspberry-like varietal fruit framed by firm, drying fine tannins. Very spicy and savoury, but its reductive elements tend to hide much else. If you don’t enjoy very ripe cheese, it’s not for you.

Rustic and ethereal, wild and spicy, with earthy, briary aromas of dark plums, blackberries, blueberries and charcuterie meats preceding a firm, deeply flavoured and beautifully structured palate of palate-staining intensity and explosive brightness. It’s long and seamless, with a firm, drying undercarriage of tight-knit tannins. One of the best Australian grenaches I have ever tasted.

d’Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2006
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Exotic and floral, with a sweet perfume of rose garden, red plums, dark berries and dark chocolates backed by musky spices. Initially plump and juicy, it becomes firm and fine-grained down its long, chalky and drying palate before finishing slightly hot, with lingering sour-edged plum and berry fruit. A mature regional style.

d’Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2007
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Scented with violets, red flowers, cranberries, mulberries, dark plums and blueberries backed by spicy notes of cloves and nutmeg, this earthy, slightly meaty but smooth and supple grenache is very open, gentle and savoury. Supple and juicy, with a smooth, fleshy palate of spicy, briary fruit framed by fine, firmish and dusty tannins, it’s finely balanced and elegant.

Long and intense, with deep aromas of red plums and berries backed by earthy notes of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Sumptuous and juicy, its deep, dark and briary palate of preserve-like plum, cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavour is framed by fine, firmish tannins, finishing with fresh acids and lingering notes of cranberry.
