Dusty, musky aromas of dried herbs, cracked pepper, raspberries, cassis and blackberries are backed by polished cedar/vanilla oak and lifted by floral undertones suggestive of cherries and cranberries, plus an exotic, spicy lift from viognier. Supple, fine and silky, it’s surprisingly sumptuous and generous, with a vibrant presence of intense fruit over a tightly knit chassis of firm, but particularly pliant tannins. Likely to build more richness and structure with bottle-age, and showing an exemplary integration of fruit, oak and tannin.
Opulent and heady, with a deep, meaty perfume of raspberries, cassis, blue flowers and marzipan that reveals charcuterie-like undertones. Its smooth, deeply layered palate reveals powerful dark plum, cherry and berry flavours powder-coated by fine, grainy and drying tannin. Long, complete and impactful, it soaks up its savoury, fine-grained oak influences, finishing with lingering sour-edged fruit and meaty undertones.
Building towards a crescendo of richness and strength, this is a stellar wine of rare balance, poise and elegance. Its floral, musky and spicy bouquet of pristine black and red berries, ground pepper and cedar/vanilla oak precede a silky-smooth, supple and seamless palate whose piercingly intense berry/plum flavours, briary undertones and seasoned oak deliver exceptional length and harmony. Precisely focused, it finishes quite savoury and spicy, with emphatic depth and presence.
A second and detailed look at this release reveals a minty, soft and juicy wine of medium weight whose lively flavours of cherries and redcurrants, blueberries and mulberries reveal an underlying greenish, menthol-like thread and a whiff of white pepper. Supported by faintly mineral tannins, it lacks great length and finishes rather herbal and simple, lacking genuine drive and emphasis.
