    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 1995
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An assertive, firm, structured and even majestic cabernet that slowly unfolds layers of fruit sweetness and complexity. ItÕs ageing very slowly indeed, but reveals a classical cabernet bouquet of violets, woodsmoke, dark berries and cigarboxes backed by deep earthy undertones, a hint of dried herbs and a touch of meatiness. Powerfully fruited but elegant, itÕs dark and fiery, with a deep core of intense ripe fruit and cedary oak that eases its way over a slightly raw and edgy spine of firm, drying extract. While it might lack a little in polish, it will certainly age tremendously over the next decade and more. Keep it.

Complex, long-term Margaret River cabernet whose briary expression of small berry fruit and smoky cedary oak overlies a thread of herby greenness which I expect to evolve into classical cigarboxy bottle-matured characters. Too a degree it’s earthy and rustic, but its seamless integration with firm, fine-grained tannins shows it’s something of an aristocrat as well.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 1999
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A wine played in two parts. At once meaty, wild and leathery, but also with a tightly-knit underswell of succulent, brightly flavoured small berry fruits. There’s a herbal, capsicum-like note to its briary aromas of cassis and raspberries, with earthy regional influences and cedar/vanilla oak qualities playing second violin. It’s long and firm, packed with distinctive small fruits before an astringent and drying finish of pliant tannins. It has aged superbly and has many, many years ahead.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2000
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Old-fashioned and developed earthy, leathery aromas of dark plums, dark olives and smoky, cedar-like oak, with just a suggestion of currants and capsicum. Lavish, luscious palate whose deep, dark fruit flavours of plums and cassis are presented in a riper, juicier expression of Margaret River cabernet. Not for the super-long term, but both generous and refined.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Cape Mentelle’s return to prominence with cabernet sauvignon continues with this alluringly complex and tightly crafted long-term wine. Its dusty, cigarboxy bouquet of cassis and dark plums, dark olives and cedar/vanilla oak reveals meaty undertones and aromatic floral qualities. Smooth and silky, it’s firm and fine-grained; a structured wine whose slightly closed and brooding core of blackberries, cassis and plums is tightly interwoven with tannin and oak.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
    Jeremy’s score 87/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A finely crafted but herbaceous cabernet of sufficient asparagus and capsicum-like greenness not to be marked higher. Its cedary aromas of light blackcurrants, mulberries and plums reveal dusty, leafy undertones of dried herbs and white cheese mould. Like many Australian cabernets of the early 1980s, its pretty berry/plum fruit does offer richness and intensity, but remains overshadowed by greenish influences. Handsomely oaked and framed by tight, fine tannins.

Aristocratic, firm and artfully balanced, with a lightly herbal and violet-like scent of briary fruit and classy new oak. Its deep flavours of small berries, dark cherries, plums and cassis overlie nuances of dried herbs, undergrowth, charcuterie-like complexity and toasty, cedary dark chocolate oak. Long and vibrant, its pristine palate is supported by firm, grainy and powdery tannins, before finishing with persistent and slightly meaty dark fruit.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

Very well handled and assembled, but perhaps reflective of slightly under and over-ripened fruit. Earthy, floral scents lift slightly closed and brooding aromas of small black and red berries, with undertones of cedar/chocolate oak and leathery, meaty influences. Long and sumptuous, its rich, firm palate underpins some ripe and currant-like cabernet flavour with cedar, vanilla and cigarboxy oak and a furry spine of slightly raw and greenish extract.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A well made wine given its cool season, itÕs scented with dusty aromas of small red berries, fresh and lightly toasty cedar/chocolate oak, capsicum and asparagus. Supple and elegant, with some pleasingly intense small black and reed berry fruit and a hit of plum knit with sweet vanilla oak, itÕs underpinned by fine, drying tannins and finishes with an underlying greenish presence likely to become more dominant with time in the bottle.

    Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
    Jeremy’s score 92/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Stylish, elegant and marginally herbaceous, this finely composed and dusty cabernet has a fragrance of cassis, dark plums and lightly smoky cedar/vanilla oak backed by snow pea and capsicum aromas, with a faintly meaty aspect. Firm but still supple and silky, it’s charmingly pliant and deeply flavoured, but despite its lingering core of classic small berry cabernet flavour, reveals an underlying thread of herbaceousness.
