Quite evolved for its age, with spicy, earthy aromas of red and black berries, plums and assertive cedary oak lifted by notes of cloves and white pepper and backed by a slightly dull and leathery aspect. ItÕs initially juicy, round and concentrated but becomes more savoury and mineral down the palate, finishing with smoky, rustic and meaty elements. Supported by pliant but grainy tannins, it lacks the length expected from this vineyard.
Simply a Hunter classic: a savoury, spicy and elegant dry red of medium weight with a remarkably gentle but surprisingly firm palate that culminates in a fresh and lingering finish. ItÕs dusty and floral, with delicate aromas of black and red berries, cherries and plums overlying nuances of fiery, meaty fruit. Long and seamless, with a fine, chalky spine of mouthwatering tannins, it extends with great drive and purity towards a refreshing and lively finish. Likely to become quite smoky and gamey with age.
Rustic, spicy Hunter shiraz with a complex, smoky bouquet of dark berries and plums over musky nuances of cloves and cinnamon, earth and saddlery. Medium in weight, the palate is elegant, soft and supple, delivering attractive and brightly lit cherry/plum flavours and restrained older oak influences against a slightly herbal and tobaccoey background. It finishes fine-grained and savoury.
A smoke-tainted shiraz whose dark, meaty and menthol-like aromas of plums and dark berries overlie smoky nuances of salami and ashtray. Its rather cooked and cedary palate packs plenty of impact and power, but retains a blockiness and smoky bitterness. It finishes rather acrid, lacking regional character.
An elegant, finely structured and intensely flavoured shiraz whose lightly smoky and spicy aromas of dark cherries, plums and cigarbox, vanilla French oak reveal meaty and chocolatey undertones. Medium to full in weight, itÕs ripe and juicy, with a pleasing length of fruit supported by fine, dry tannins. It finishes with a suggestion of mint and menthol, with a lingering note of smoked bacon.
Oak plays second fiddle in this restrained, rather shy but classical Hunter expression of elegance and savoury charm. Dark and smoky, with a wild, briary bouquet of dark plums, blackberries, dark chocolates and redcurrants lifted nuances of pepper, cloves and cinnamon. Medium-weight, supple and perfectly ripened, its pleasingly intense core of spicy dark berries and plums extends long down its fragile, rather dusty backbone, finishing with a lingering core of smoky fruit and a delightful acidity.
Fine-grained, supple and gentle, this rather typical Hunter ÔburgundyÕ style reveals an earthy, dusty and slightly meaty bouquet of restrained small red and black berries, plums and cherries backed by nuances of vanilla/cedar oak, spice and a fresh whiff of pepper. Supported by a fine, dusty spine, itÕs long and reserved, with fresh, sour-edged fruit and gentle oak extending long and balanced towards a savoury finish. Certain to build weight and richness over time.
Surprisingly firmish, this modern spin on the classic Hunter theme has a meaty, fragrant and oaky bouquet whose intense aromas of red berries, blueberries and dark cherries are backed by nuances of chocolate, blood plum, cloves and cinnamon. ItÕs fullish to medium-bodied, with a firmish, crunchy spine beneath an elegant, almost sour-edged presence of black and blue fruits and small red berries, finishing with pleasing length, focus and freshness.
