Unusually powerful and concentrated Hunter shiraz, but slowly evolving into the region’s classic meaty, earthy and animal hide complexity. Its opulent, heady aromas of dark cherries and plums are supported by chocolate oak, white pepper and spices. Its deeply flavoured, sumptuous spicy fruitcake-like palate reveals some sweet leathery development, but with its fine-grained tannins, it remains surprisingly elegant. Exceptional length and balance.

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 1999
    Jeremy’s score 94/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Developing medium to full-bodied fleshy Hunter shiraz already showing complex spicy sweet leather, chocolate and musky complexity. There’s more than a hint of the farmyard, with a slightly horsey edge to the wine’s savoury and meaty flavour development. That said, thoroughly charming for a few years yet.

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2000
    Jeremy’s score 97/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Assertive, exceptionally ripe Hunter shiraz made in a modern fashion, but in a style faithful to its region. Wild, musky and rustic aromas of dark plums, blackberries, dark chocolate and sweet smoky mocha oak precede an elegant, but firm and penetrative palate of intensity and balance. Piercing, dark and sour-edged, the leathery chocolate liqueur and plummy fruit is wrapped around tight, taut tannins.

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2002
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

Fine Hunter Valley shiraz with an already complex, meaty and pungent fragrance of spicy redcurrants, plums and cherries over nuances of undergrowth and polished leather. Its smooth, elegant and savoury palate of full to medium weight is classic Hunter – earthy, leathery and spicy, with a wonderful depth of sweetly ripened fruit framed by fine-grained and silky tannins.

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2003
    Jeremy’s score 92/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Wild, meaty and lightly smoky, with deep aromas of red and black berries and an underlying earthiness, this assertive and richly structured Hunter shiraz has a heady bouquet of raspberries and cranberries backed by sweet vanilla, cedar and caramel-like oak. Firm, fine-grained and savoury, its deeply flavoured and bony palate delivers intense plum and berry flavour backed by evolving meaty, earthy and leathery undertones. There’s a fraction of charry rawness beneath the fruit as the palate finishes, but there is nothing like the more obvious presence of smoke taint that I saw twelve months ago in this very wine.

Fine and silky, this heady and perfumed Hunter shiraz has an intense and floral aroma of violets and raspberries, cherries and cedar/vanilla oak backed by cinnamon-like spices. Smooth and restrained, with a pleasing youthful sappiness, its pristine palate of fresh blackcurrant, raspberry and cherry flavours is framed by velvet tannins. Delightfully long and elegant, it is likely to build in flavour and structure, while remaining a finer and less overt style. (

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2005
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Slightly meaty and musky, ethereal aromas of dark berries, plums and violets are backed by sweet, fine-grained oak. Long, fine and elegant, with a lingering and palate-staining core of cassis, blackberries and dark plums, it’s tightly matched with sweet vanilla, cedar and dark chocolate oak. A slightly more powerful expression of Hunter shiraz, with underlying firmness and plenty of spicy regional quality.

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2007
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An elegant, medium to full-bodied Hunter classic. Its smoky, floral bouquet of wild, brambly plums, cherries and blackberries, fresh new cedary oak reveals musky, spicy undertones and a hit of liqueur chocolate. Building in weight and intensity towards a sumptuous and savoury crescendo, the palate is dark, meaty and smoky, with a fabulous length of sour-edged fruit backed by nuances of roast chestnuts, tar and bramble.

    Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2009
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A brilliant Hunter shiraz of authenticity and style. Medium in weight, itÕs a supple, elegant expression of the old Australian ÔburgundyÕ with a wild, briary bouquet of deep small berry/plum fruit lifted by a pungent musky, meaty perfume, with undertones of polished leather, dark chocolate and cedar. Dripping with intense, spicy and briary fruit, itÕs supported by a silky-fine extract of pliant tannins, finishing quite savoury, with exemplary length, freshness and acidity.
