A spicy fragrance of blackberries, violets, cassis and dark plums is assertively but cleverly matched by heavily scented, smoky and fine-grained vanilla and smoked oyster oak influences. Polished, smooth and seamless, its long, supple palate of penetrative and tightly focused dark fruit flavours culminates in a lingering, refined finish stylishly framed by fine tannins. I’d mark it higher still but for what I perceive as a faint saltiness.

Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2003
    Jeremy’s score 92/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Further evidence of Wolf Blass’ movement towards superior quality and refinement. Scented with spicy aromas of cassis, blackberries and dark plums, it’s lifted by a perfume of violets and vanilla/cedary oak. Medium to full in weight, it’s piercing and minty, with a penetrative expression of ripe, minty small berry flavours and menthol offset by restrained oak and framed by fine, powdery tannins. Long and lingering, without being overcooked or heavy-handed.

A finely crafted and elegant modern shiraz whose spicy, peppery and slightly jammy fragrance of cassis, raspberries and sweet red plums is backed by oaky suggestions of vanilla, coconut ice, dark chocolate and cedar. Its long and stylish palate of cassis, dark plums and blackberries is tightly knit with firm, drying and bony tannins. There’s a hint of saltiness, with a background of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2005
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Some classy winemaking has married sweet, toasty vanilla oak and smooth tannin with well-ripened, generous and juicy dark-fruited shiraz, whose flavours of plums, blackberries and cassis just lack genuine impact and presence on the palate. Like so many 2005 reds, it lacks the essential fruit quality for a higher rating.

Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2006
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Dark, peppery scents of cassis, blackberries, smoky oak, dark chocolate and licorice precede a smooth, sumptuous and initially sweet-fruited palate backed by slightly gritty tannin that just falls a fraction flat towards the finish. Very well made, but lacks genuine length.

Wolf Blass Grey Label Shiraz 2010
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Deeply concentrated and powerful, but smooth and approachable, with a brambly, dark-fruited and minty bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberries, menthol and violets underpinned by fresh chocolatey oak. Dripping with intense, dark berry/plum flavours, its sumptuous, handsomely oaked and sweetly fruited palate is framed by fine, al dente tannins, reveals nuances of menthol and eucalypt, and finishes with pleasing length and balance.
