  • Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2005
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Handsomely oaked, with assertive mocha, dark chocolate and vanilla influences beneath its slightly currant-like expression of dark, plummy fruit, it’s initially very smooth and approachable. Ripe and minty, with dark berry flavours framed by powdery tannins, it finishes with some overt oak, a hint of spirity hotness and a slightly gritty extract.

Sumptuous, elegant McLaren Vale shiraz of depth and character. harvested without a hint of overripeness, it’s wild, heady and very spicy, with a spicy bouquet of dark plums and berries, licorice and dark olives backed by a whiff of currant and lightly toasty aromatic new oak. It drips with intense dark fruit that sinks back into a velvet cushion of fine, supple tannins, finishing with length, lusciousness and surprising suppleness.

Stylish and finely crafted, but from marginally overcooked fruit. A vibrant bouquet of sweet, slightly currant-like raspberries and blackberries, plums and sweet chocolate/cedar oak with fresh nuances of cloves and white pepper precedes a generous, juicy and elegant palate. Deep flavours of redcurrants, currants and plums are tightly knit with fine, sweet oak and framed by pliant, faintly crunchy tannins, finishing with kernel-like notes and fresh acids, but also a lingering suggestion of stressed, raisiny fruit.

An elegant, supple, full to medium-bodied shiraz whose intense, musky aromas of blackberries, cassis, briar and dark plums is tightly knit with cedar/chocolatey/vanilla oak and backed by spicy, meaty nuances. Integrated with cedary oak and a smooth, polished backbone, its silky-smooth palate of juicy, pastille-like cassis, mulberry and dark plum flavour finishes with pleasing length but reveals a slight hollowness.

Modern and pristine, with a sweet, faintly minty and genuinely floral bouquet of cassis, dark plums and blackberries backed by fresh, tight-grained cedar/vanilla oak. Smooth and elegant, its bright core of small dark berries extends down a pliant spine of polished tannins, finishing with length and freshness. Just a fraction soulless for an even higher rating.

  • Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2015

Contemporary McLaren Vale shiraz with polish and focus. Intense flavours of blackberries, cassis, dark plums and blueberries knit tightly with fine chocolate/vanilla oak and firmish, but very pliant, fine tannins. It finishes long and persistent with a lingering core of sour-edged fruit.
