A fine, tightly focused Coonawarra cabernet likely to age well. Its dusty perfume of violets, cassis, cedar and vanilla overlies some complex and gamey oak-derived aromas. Smooth and silky, its long and fine-grained palate delivers a lingering core of intense cassis, blueberry and dark plum flavour tightly knit with cedar/vanilla oak and framed by firm, powdery tannin. It finishes long and dusty, with undertones of dried herbs and dark olives.

    Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
    Jeremy’s score 90/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Handsomely backed by dark, toasty, smoky oak, this sumptuous and cedary cabernet carries its 15% alcohol surprisingly well. Scented with dark plums, berries and cedar, with underlying meaty complexity, it’s smooth, even and juicy. Fractionally warm, with a plush, pristine expression of concentrated cassis/dark berry flavour and lightly roasted French oak, it’s framed by firm, smooth tannin.

    Rated 0 out of 5

An assertive, sumptuous cabernet with a dark, cedary bouquet of cassis, plums, black cherries and black olives backed by nuances of vanilla, dried herbs and minerals. ItÕs sumptuously ripened, perhaps slightly overcooked and a fraction jammy, with a pleasing length of deep fruit supported by a firm, grainy backbone.

Smooth and juicy but fractionally overripe, this vibrant young cabernet has an intense aroma of plums, blackberries and sweet cedar/vanilla oak backed by suggestions of prunes and dried herbs. Framed by firmish, fine and dusty tannins, itÕs luscious and sweetly fruited, before thinning out a little towards a slightly spirity, meaty and herbal finish.

    Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
    Jeremy’s score 89/100

Sweet, juicy aromas of cassis, raspberries and chocolatey oak with undertones of mineral and cola, mint and menthol precede a generous but slightly spirity palate. Its jammy and slightly confectionary flavours of cassis, raspberries, cherries and mulberries are handsomely backed by cedar/chocolate oak and smooth, polished tannins. Slightly under and over-ripened.

Stylish, fine-grained and carefully balanced cabernet likely to age well. Its dusty, dark aromas of cassis, raspberries and mulberries are knit with fine cedar/vanilla oak and reveal a whiff of dried herbs. ItÕs long and vibrant, with brightly lit fruit and measured oak backed by a supple, measured spine, becoming softer and smoother with breathing.

    Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A very good wine, displaying a seamless length of fruit, oak and extract. Its intensely floral and faintly minty fragrance of cassis, raspberries and redcurrants is handsomely backed by cedar/vanilla oak, while its smooth and generous palate delivers a brightness and juiciness of fruit. Tightly knit with sweet oak and long, fine-grained tannins, itÕs long, polished and wrapped in a fresh acidity. A fraction too warm and spirity for an even higher rating.

    Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Faintly leafy aromas of cassis, mulberries, dark plums and fresh smoky cedar/vanilla oak reveal dusty nuances of dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, itÕs gentle and elegant, with pleasing cedar and smoky, cigarboxy characters and sweet varietal cabernet flavour finished by a fractionally sappy and green-edged acidity. Nevertheless, a fine effort from this cool vintage.

Very powerful and able to hold its assertive alcoholic presence to some degree, this plush and deeply concentrated cabernet has a densely packed bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, dark plum and mulberries, fresh chocolate/cedar oak and dried herbs backed by a whiff of graphite. Bordering jammy, itÕs luscious presence of dark plum and berry fruit and faintly smoky, cedary oak is framed by a loose-knit spine of drying tannins. ItÕs profoundly ripened but not overcooked.

    Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An outstanding cabernet with remarkable intensity, poise and structure. To my mind reminiscent of the classic 1984 release of the same label, this delivers the depth of fruit sought after in great Coonawarra cabernet but with the structure and balance more reminiscent of Bordeaux. Its penetrative aromas of cassis, mulberries, dark plums and fresh cedar/vanilla oak reveal dusty, faintly herbal nuances, while its palate-staining presence of small black and red berries is framed by an exceptional spine of drying, chalky tannins that culminate in a graphite-like minerality. It will live and develop for ages.
