More of a wild and evolved Leeuwin Chardonnay this generous and austere wine is now drying up a little at the finish but offers earthy almost feral yeast-derived complexity and character some toast and honeysuckle-like development and a smooth and oaky if distinctly phenolic palate
Still a little closed and restrained this more delicate dusty and savoury wine has a reserved grainy aroma of stonefruit and cloves before a forward and fleshy palate of substance and weight but lacks the generosity and complexity of great years
Possibly the most distinctive Leeuwin Chardonnay yet a superlative wine whose fragrance of wet slate and mineral peaches and pineapple is developing some toastiness and hay-like complexity It’s incredibly long and complete perfectly focused and balanced culminating in an exemplary mineral finish
Uncompromising power meets elegance and fineness in this rich almost brassy wine whose rich tropical melon and citrus fruit ably handles its punchy oak assertive alcohol and firm phenolic grip It lasts well with lingering mealy and savoury qualities
Another feather in the CartwrightBrocksopp cap this classically proportioned chardonnay is simultaneously restrained elegant seamless and incredibly concentrated Its bouquet is already complex enough to reveal aromas of peaches melons and figs scents of grilled nuts bacony and buttery malolactic influences a whiff of bound sulphide and lightly smoky tight-grained spicy oak all of which appear in spades on the palate Superb stuff
Rather a ripe and powerful wine much in the mould of the assertive 1990 vintage and likely to take as long to look its best Ripe grapefruit melon and lemon sherbet aromas are lifted with lightly toasty and vanilla oak while there’s more of a peachy accent on the chewy rich palate whose creamy lees qualities and butterscotch malolactic influences will need time to settle
A very good very ripe but by its own spectacular standards not a classic Leeuwin Estate Bright aromas of pineapple stonefruit grapefruit and lemon zest are given more earthy farmyard leesy aromas than previous examples of this wine while its integration of lightly smoky vanilla oak is exemplary It’s multi-layered and multi-faceted with an unctuous concentrated and marginally hot palate whose thick creamy texture bursts with tropical and ruby grapefruit flavour before a clean vibrant if fractionally spirity finish of lively acidity
A fine but not top-rate Leeuwin chardonnay that despite some obviously intelligent winemaking reveals some rather raw and spirity characters There’s a restrained core of tropical fruit melon and grapefruit aroma enclosed by fine-grained vanilla and lightly toasty French oak scented by cloves and nutmeg with minty and herbal undertones Rich and chewy with a long concentrated palate of citrus mango and melon fruit offset by buttery malolactic influences it finishes a little warm and alcoholic
A classically sumptuous luxuriant chardonnay from this celebrated maker with a lightly smoky floral perfume of minerals grapefruit and lemon zest Very reserved despite being so richly succulent unfolding layers of deep fruit flavours creamy oak and cashew nuts before a finish of exceptional length and balance Absolutely seamless and harmonious
An alluring bouquet of quince grapefruit cumquat and spicy rather perfumed oak with lightly herbal undertones of lime juice and wheat meal Vibrant and creamy its initially restrained fruit builds steadily and effortlessly towards a lingering crescendo of assertive powerful stonefruit citrus and melon chardonnay flavour remaining exceptionally elegant and seamless There’s a hint of minerality and a suggestion of bacon-like malolactic influence while its baby fat-like viscosity eases into a lingering finish of tautness and assertive definition
A classic Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay whose perfectly focused citrus stonefruit and tropical fruit qualities are finely interwoven with tightly knit oak and superbly tight crystalline acidity There’s a suggestion of lemon tart cloves vanilla and mineral beneath its pristine aromas of grapefruit peach and lemon butter Exceptionally long and pronounced its taut and persistent palate knits pristine layers of pineapple banana lemon and grapefruit with the purest brightest of tight-knit acidity Exemplary
A stylish elegant and seamless chardonnay whose floral aromas of grapefruit lemon mango and sweet vanilla oak overlie nuances of mineral pineapple and honeysuckle Initially round and juicy it’s long and mouthfilling with a core of explosively intense fruit It finishes with clean acids and a hint of minerality and while it’s a first class wine it remains a little less defined and is likely to mature earlier than the top vintages
