Medium-bodied, long and gentle, with a pristine, floral perfume of cassis, blackberries, blood plums and tight-grained chocolate/cedar oak backed by a fragrance of freshly dried herbs. Penetrative flavours of red cherries, blueberries, dark plums are supported by creamy, polished oak and fine, slinky tannins, extending with purity and focus towards a finish of sophistication and remarkable balance. A classic wine from this vineyard, artfully presented with the utmost of finesse.
Heady, wild and brambly, this deeply aromatic, spicy and peppery shiraz has substance and richness, with plenty of meaty, reductive complexity. An intense bouquet of blackberries, dark plums, cassis and fresh, perfumed oak reveals complex gamey undertones and suggestions of briar. Smooth and very fine-grained, its sumptuously flavoured and polished palate of dark, juicy and slightly sour-edged fruit unfolds suggestions of mint and dried herbs, before finishing with vibrant acids and lingering nuances of dark chocolate. Dangerously ready to drink now. Drinking superbly in February 2025, with a fully complete and vibrant core of leathery fruit, beautifully fine tannins and wonderful length, culminating in a savoury finish of fruit and licorice.
This is the wine that showed me Paradise IV is a special vineyard. It’s polished, developing and leathery, with undertones of roasting meats and dark chocolates. Lifted with hrady, spicy aromas of dark fruits, it’s long, textural and savoury, with a wonderful fine gravelly spine plus lingering mineral and savoury qualities.
A very stylish St Joseph-like shiraz with a profoundly heady, spicy and musky perfume of sweet red and black berries, plums and cherries is lifted by cedary, walnut-like oak and backed by notes of black pepper, cloves, minerals, stalky herbal notes and animal hide. It’s long, finely crafted and supple, with a generous, mouthfilling presence of spicy fruit and savoury oak that builds towards a crescendo at the finish. Supported by silky-fine but genuinely firm tannin, it’s wrapped up by a soft, but refreshing acidity. Tasted in February 2025, it’s still youthful, restrained and waiting to show real bottle development. A stunner. Burgundian.
A sensual, Grand Cru experience from Geelong shiraz, and a remarkable expression of an Australian terroir. A heady, voluminous bouquet deeply layered with floral scents and a lustrous presence of small dark fruits, underbrush and cocoa, with assertive suggestions of mocha, musky spices and briar. Its unctuous, plush and vibrant palate of dark, juicy fruit and fresh, fine-grained oak are underpinned by assertive, mouth-watering but fine tannins, and finish with meaty, earthy nuances and a near-perfect balance of soft acids. Tasted in February 2025, it’s simply brilliant. Right up there with top Burgundy. It’s nowhere near falling apart. Dried and fresh fruits, Puer tea and juicy red plums,
Exceptionally stylish, willowy and elegant, crafted in a style reminiscent of Cote-Rotie. Deep, faintly peppery aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, dark plums and fine-grained, deeply perfumed oak are lifted by scents of blue flowers, musk, charcuterie meats and Indian spices. Smooth and sensuous, its supple and beautifully measured palate of translucent fruit, spice and tightly knit oak is supported by fine, crunchy tannins, finishing very long and savoury, with lingering suggestions of mineral. Retasted in February 2025, it’s heady and spicy, delivering an elegant, fine and profoundly intense core of vivacious fruit, finishing savory, with licorice qualities. A little like the world’s smoothest roast lamb and rosemary.
A wild, spicy, meaty Rhne Valley style whose rather funky bouquet of dark plums, blackberries and briar is underpinned by smoky, mocha and chestnut-like oak and faint herbal nuances. Medium to full-bodied, it’s sumptuous and seamless, with a deep, lingering core of vibrant dark plums, cherries, licorice and savoury quality wrapped in velvet tannins. It delivers a fragrant and depth of expression rare in Australian shiraz. Tasted in 2025 it’s maturing and evolving considerably, with some herbal and citrusy notes emerging. It’s become a little hollow and faintly sappy and green-edged, but retains a wonderful intensity and core of flavour. It does open up with finesse and length. The flavour profile and elegance are pure Dardel, from a truly challenging cool season.
Profoundly flavoured, gentle and savoury, this effortless young Rhone-inspired shiraz reveals a deep, heady and exotically spiced bouquet of dark berries, cherries and plums laced with scents of violets, black pepper and fragrant, fine-grained oak. Long and smooth, it glides effortlessly down the palate despite its intensity, delivering an exceptional depth of wild, brambly fruit and newish oak underpinned by pliant, powdery tannins, finishing with a persistent core of fruit and a mineral note. Tasted in February 2025, it’s beginning to show some development, deeply scented with vibrant red fruits, licorice, roasting tray notes and potpourri. The palate is effortlessly long and pristine, finely polished, long and savoury. Pure class.
Stylish, ultra-fine and savoury, with a wild, heady, spicy and peppery bouquet of briary dark berries, plums and aromatic tight-grained oak backed by notes of musky spices, briar and smoked meats. Medium in weight, it’s supple, smooth and willowy, with sweet, pastille-like flavours of cassis, blackberries and dark plums extending over a long, fine-gained, crunchy spine towards a lingering, faintly meaty, mineral and savoury finish of exceptional balance and elegance. Complete and tightly focused, it should age well. Just a fraction jammy for an even higher rating. Tasted in February 2025, it has evolved into a delightful warmer climate wine that is developing finely but with less length of fruit than the top vintages
