A ripe, slightly spirity but typically generous Barossa shiraz, this meaty and slightly reductive young red has a liqueur-like aroma of black and red berries, plums and dried herbs overlying sweet cedar/chocolate/vanilla oak. Plush and juicy, itÕs soft, supple and approachable, with a moderately rich palate of concentrated fruit and creamy oak framed by fine, loose-weave tannins.

    Jeremy’s score 89/100

    $30.00

A forward, ripe and flavoursome shiraz whose confiture-like expression of blackberries, redcurrants and dark plums reveals both a slight jammy overripeness as well as a green-edged presence of dried herbs. ItÕs artfully made, with oak playing a supportive role that contributes to the wineÕs palate sweetness, does not present much in the way of tannin structure and finishes slightly thin.

  • Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2007
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    $35.00

Firm and drying, this assertive, deeply flavoured, dense and profoundly ripened shiraz manages to retain shape and elegance. With a luscious, juicy and slightly sour-edged expression of plums, blackberries, blueberries and redcurrants knit with sweet vanilla, mocha and chocolate-like oak and framed by tight, firm and drying tannins, it finishes with pleasing length, refreshing acidity and a slightly savoury aspect.

Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2008
    Jeremy’s score 90/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An interesting, firm but pliant and almost caricature-like wine with everything going for it except genuine fruit sweetness and length. Dense, jammy, rather baked and porty aromas of blackberries, cassis, raspberries and sweet chocolatey oak precede a sumptuous, concentrated palate whose dark, briary fruit does fall slightly short at the finish. Trying too hard?

Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2009
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Sweetly scented with raspberries, redcurrants, vanilla oak and fresh violets, this smooth, supple shiraz of medium to full-body delivers a modestly rich depth of juicy red fruit supported by a fine, velvety spine. Very polished and marginally spirity to finish, it represents a more elegant and supple expression of this label that might surprise some of its devotees.

Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2010
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Deeply flavoured, elegant and finely measured, this laid-back and restrained shiraz has a sweet, juicy bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, dark plums and slightly seasoned, spicy chocolatey oak lifted by scents of violets, graphite and white pepper and backed by suggestions of bloodiness and roasting pan scrapings. ItÕs long and complete, with deep, dark plum, blackberry and cassis-like fruit tightly knit with smoky oak and pliant, loose-knit tannins. It finishes with a gentle persistence and a bright acidity.

Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2011
    Jeremy’s score 89/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

It lacks its typical mid-palate richness, but this medium to full-bodied shiraz has a lightly meaty, spicy bouquet that begins a little muted but slowly reveals smoky aromas of dark plums and cherries, chocolatey oak and a fresh floral perfume. Supported by fine, drying tannins, its soft, plump and forward fruit is supported by a drying and slatey chassis, finishing with a strong, if slightly cardboardy oakiness.

Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2012
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Very smooth and gentle, with a slightly earthy, meaty and developed bouquet of fresh red and black berries, restrained cedar/vanilla oak and muddy undertones lifted by bright floral notes. Supported by fine, dusty tannins, itÕs soft, round and juicy, richly and deeply ripened, with a moderately smooth and warm palate whose fruit finishes without great length or persistence. A lesser and shorter term expression of this wine.

Penfolds Bin 28 (Formerly Kalimna Bin 28) Shiraz 2013
    Jeremy’s score 92/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Long and complete, this fine, firm and drying young shiraz is a little less sumptuous and weighty than traditional for this label. Dripping with notes of the roasting tray, its smoky bouquet of blackberries, dark plums and briar, itÕs backed by fresh chocolate/cedary oak and a hint of blueberry. Initially juicy and generous, it becomes finer and more lean down the palate, building with layers of chalky texture, fruit and oak towards a faintly mineral finish.
