Developing, rather oxidative and spicy aromas of dried flowers, citrus and melon precede a generous, round and evenly textured, smooth palate whose evolved bottle-aged flavours culminate in a lingering nutty and savoury finish. More advanced than previous releases under this label.

    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2002
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Slightly pungent, punchy and meaty, this heady, floral semillon reveals smoky undertones of dried flowers, lime juice and hints of lanolin. ItÕs smooth and luxuriant, delivering a long, seamless palate of intense melon/citrus fruit before fine, chalky and mineral undertones cut in at the finish. Bone-dry, itÕs a stylish, sophisticated and finely balanced wine for the long term. Its major problem is that itÕs so delicious already.

Smooth, sumptuous and deeply fruited, this beautifully composed semillon has a mineral bouquet of lemon sherbet, honeydew melon, lime and chalky undertones backed by suggestions of camphor and smokiness. Beginning to show some toastiness, itÕs long and deeply flavoured, with a powerful presence of melon and lime extending well down the palate towards a nutty, savoury finish. Finely balanced and ready to flower with further development.

    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2004
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Still retaining plenty of freshness and tightness, with true length and a fine underlying chalkiness. ItÕs still very youthful, however, with a heady, wild, floral and lively bouquet beginning to reveal some tobaccoey, waxy, toasty, ginger and lemongrass-like complexity beneath its chalky aromas of fresh lemon rind and melon. Very smooth, itÕs fine and quite succulent, with a deep, tangy core of citrus and melon fruit that extends towards a lingering, nutty and savoury finish.

    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2005
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An exemplary, pristine Hunter semillon of the low-alcohol old school style that typically becomes wondrously complex with time in the bottle. Tightly focused, long and still very youthful, itÕs scented with mineral notes of lemon, lime and honeydew melon backed by dried flowers, hints of bathpowder and grilled nuts. Long and finely sculpted, with fresh mandarin and lemon-like flavours beginning to develop some richness, itÕs underpinned by a fine chalkiness and finishes with a taut, tight acidity.

    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2006
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A generous, Lovedale-like semillon whose primary qualities are now giving way to some delicious bottle-aged complexity. Toasty, waxy and floral, its tobaccoey aromas of melon-like fruit reveal nuances of minerals and lemon. Rich and creamy, itÕs deeply and lusciously flavoured but also profoundly textured, with smoky, waxy notes and a lively core of fruit finishing with excellent length, freshness and focus, punctuated by tangy, lemony acids and a savoury aspect.

    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2007
    Jeremy’s score 92/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A lean, very youthful and slow-maturing semillon whose delicate, lightly floral bouquet of fresh lemon and melon has a crystalline brightness. Its brightly lit but faintly syrupy, with intense, if slightly angular flavours of citrus and melon extending with good but not great length towards a refreshingly bright finish. Very well made, but lacks the length and complexity of the great vintages.

    Brokenwood ILR Reserve Semillon 2009
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Still very youthful and lacking development, this remarkable wine has exceptional potential to age slowly. Its delicate aromas of citrusy fruit and dusty floral notes are backed by suggestions of nutty and waxy complexity. ItÕs long and lean, with a fresh, penetrative length of lemon, grapefruit and green melon-like flavours and faint creamy, nutty nuances extending towards a taut finish of citrusy acids. Hands off for some time yet!
