Balnaves The Blend Cabernet Blend 2012
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Underpinned by sinewy, mouthwatering tannins, this deeply ripened but slightly dehydrated red blend delivers a surprisingly complex bouquet of cassis, dark plums and cedary, chocolatey oak backed by nuances of mint and dried herbs. ItÕs long and lean, with notes of currant and prune beneath its lively flavours of cassis and dark plums. Just lacking genuine fruit sweetness and brightness, itÕs a finely made and structured wine suggestive of deep, dark but marginally baked fruit.

    Jeremy’s score 90/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Smooth and polished, this ripe blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot delivers exceptional value. Its minty bouquet of dark berries, cherries and red plums reveals a faintly raisined, spice cake aspect, while its palate has some plushness and length, a fine pliant backbone and a refreshing, soft acidity. Fullish to medium in weight, it delivers depth and flavour plus the potential to develop in the bottle for at least five years.

    Jeremy’s score 89/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A long, firm and astringent merlot-dominant blend that softens somewhat with breathing. Scented with minty aromas of violets, cassis, cedar/chocolate oak and dried herbs, itÕs a complete and balanced young wine that will age for at least another five years. Its brightly lit palate of blueberry and mulberry flavour knits with fresh cedar/vanilla oak and finishes with pleasing balance. Outstanding value.

    Rated 0 out of 5

Meaty, slightly musky layers of deeply concentrated small red and black berry fruits and suggestions of dark olives over cedar and vanilla oak. Sumptuous, powerfully structured palate of pristine small berry and dark plum fruit framed by firm, but velvet-smooth extract. Very long and harmonious, culminating in a silky-fine finish of persistent dark fruit, sweet oak, fresh mint and dried herbs.

Balnaves The Tally Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
    Jeremy’s score 97/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Powerfully structured, richly fruited and handsomely crafted, this is a cabernet of First Growth attitude and presence. Alluring and lightly smoky, its perfume of dark plums, black and red berries, violets, spicy and cedar/vanilla/chocolate new oak reveals a hint of dried herbs. Profound in its impact, its still closed but densely concentrated palate of deep blackberry, blueberry and dark olive flavour is tightly integrated with new oak and a drying, powdery spine of firm tannin. Perfectly honed, with great strength and longevity.

Balnaves The Tally Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A powerful and savoury cabernet whose deep, dark, rather closed and tight-fisted aromas of black fruits, dark chocolate and dried herbs reveal a meaty aspect. Its long and finely honed palate marries deep, bright and dark-fruited cabernet flavour with assertive but balanced smoky vanilla bean and cedary oak and a frame of fine, firm and powdery tannin. It finishes very long indeed, with slightly dried herbal undertones of mint and menthol, plus a marginally baked note at the back of the palate. Tasted again in 2021, it remains rather too hard-edged and raw, and has not developed much by way of generosity, smoothness or complexity with age.

Balnaves The Tally Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Reminiscent in style and structure to the great Howard Park red from 1992, this deeply flavoured and firmly constructed cabernet has a deep, alluring and floral bouquet of blackberries, cassis, dark plums, dried herbs and minerals tightly knit with seasoned oak. Framed by a drying, but fine-grained extract, it delivers classic Coonawarra elegance, with a spotless, long and pristine palate enhanced by meaty, gamey complexity, finishing with lingering hints of black fruit and soy.
