A fine, elegant, medium-bodied cabernet blend whose lightly floral fragrance of red and black berries, dark plums and cedary oak reveals notes of blueberries, minerals, dried herbs and a hint of cigarbox. It’s long without being exceptional in that regard, with a fruit-driven palate of dark berry/cherry-like fruit underpinned by a fine, sandpapery extract. Balanced and easy to drink, it however lacks the core of fruit, drive and genuine structure of the finest examples of its kind.
A very reserved, measured, long-term cabernet blend whose bouquet of red berries and cherries, blood plums and blackberries reveals a youthfully vegetal hint of malbec, smoky cedar/vanilla oak and pleasing gravelly, mineral undertones. Medium to fullish in weight, it steadily and slowly unfolds a translucently clear expression of pristine fruit knit with creamy oak that presently takes time to deliver the richness and depth it promises, along with the earthy, gravelly and more savoury aspects it ultimately reveals. Artful and polished, it is set for the long term. Give it plenty of aeration should you open it while youthful.
A ripe, dark and deeply flavoured gamay with drive, palate length, focus and structure. Densely packed aromas of dark cherries and plums backed by suggestions of bubblegum are lifted by bright aromas of dark flowers. Underpinned by a genuine spine of fine tannins, an intense core of dark fruits stains the palate before being wrapped in a bright, refreshing acidity. A proper wine, with some ability to develop further.
Quite mineral and with a forward, almost oily core of fruit, it tends to stick on the inside of the mouth with a cloying adherence of unusual texture. There’s clearly some attractive flavour, but there’s an aspect of the finish that just doesn’t clear the mouth with freshness. This is not uncommon amongst Adelaide Hills chardonnays of this season, which did feature issues related to local bushfires. It’s a minor aspect of this wine at the moment, but my experience suggests it’s likely to increase over time. It goes without saying that I’d love to be proven wrong.
Experts can indeed make exceptional skin-contacted white wines, and here’s one from Mario Marson. Its heady, faintly meaty aromas of yellow flowers, green apple skin, lime and dried herbs reveal a faint mineral note. At once luscious and creamy, it’s also fine and mouthwatering, with a long, layered palate of stonefruit, apple and pear-like fruit underpinned by a fine chalkiness and finished with lingering nuances of crabapple, blood orange and lime, all wrapped in a vital acidity. Lively, ripe and creamy, with scents of white and yellow flowers, yellow peach and a hint of smokiness backed by a whiff of nougat and roast chestnut. Generous, round and smooth, it’s soft and mouthfilling, finishing refreshingly dry, with a gentle acidity. It’s easy to tell when a winemaker just loves his work…
