One of the finest Margaret River shirazes of recent seasons, and a powerful one at that. Almost exaggerated spicy licorice and peppery blackberry, briary cassis, blueberry and plum fruit is matched with smoky, mocha and gamey new oak character. It’s long, intense and smoky, with deep, dark penetrative flavours tightly interwoven with firm, but fine tannins. A fine maker’s style.

Very stylish, well-made wine with a musky perfume of violets, slightly meaty and overcooked dark cherries, plums, raspberries and cassis. There’s also a hint of tomato, which is also present on its long, firm and moderately concentrated palate. Revealing a generous depth of fruit, good integration and balance, it has elegance and fineness aplenty.

Vasse Felix Syrah (Formerly Shiraz) 2003
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An elegant and moderately full-bodied shiraz with fruit and oak aplenty. Its heady, spicy aromas of violets, cassis and raspberries are backed by lightly smoky vanilla/mocha oak. There’s a tomato-like and herbal note around the palate’s sweet red and black berry flavours plus a metallic note edge to its tannins. Finishes with peppery fruit and a hint of menthol.

Vasse Felix Syrah (Formerly Shiraz) 2004

A modern, intensely varietal, almost exaggerated shiraz with a vibrant, peppery and slightly tomatoey aromas of spicy red berries and plums backed by lightly toasty mocha/vanilla oak. Elegant and tightly structured, its pristine and spicy palate of opulent small berry, plum and cassis flavour has a wild, almost feral aspect. Neatly bound about a fine spine of pliant tannins, it finishes with a salty, mineral note.

Vasse Felix Syrah (Formerly Shiraz) 2005
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Ripe and meaty, with bright red cherry, blackberry and tomato-like fruit backed by sweet smoky oak, suggestions of menthol and spice, plus leafy, herbal nuances. Full to medium in weight, it’s oaky and dark-fruited, but lacks genuine length and focus.

Vasse Felix Syrah (Formerly Shiraz) 2006
    Jeremy’s score 86/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

With plenty of rich, meaty and slightly jammy flavours of blackberries, mulberries and dark plums, this is a generously oaked but rather green-edged shiraz whose depth of fruit and smart chocolatey oak cannot conceal its more herbaceous undertones. Its fruit is slightly sour-edged, its tannins a little angular and it finishes with a slightly salty minerality.

Peppery, musky and briary aromas of red berries and smoky cedar/vanilla oak are backed by minty, spicy, menthol-like notes. Smooth and supple, complex and polished, itÕs medium in weight, with a moderately intense forward presence of red berries and redcurrants. It becomes slight short and sappy, finishing with greenish edges and without great conviction.
