Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 1998
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A real sleeper of a wine, with a rather closed perfume of blackberries, raspberries, cassis and violets backed by spicy, cedar/vanilla oak. Very elegant and willowy, long and fine-grained, it almost unwillingly reveals layers of concentrated fruits, sweet oak and a frame of drying, astringent tannins. All it needs is time.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 1999
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Exotically musky, wild and heady aromas of brambly ripe berry fruits of piecing intensity with fine, tight-knit smoked oyster, clove and cedar oak influences. Wonderfully rich, elegant and perfectly ripened palate of pristine dark berry and plum flavours, creamy, smoky French oak and powder-dry tannins. Better than the 1997 Grange.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2000
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Lightly overripe and jammy, but nurtured into a harmonious, smooth and creamy wine, revealing a developing but dusty, earthy and leathery aroma of opulent cassis, redcurrant and plum fruit with cedar/vanilla oak. Revealing both under and overripe flavours, it’s a faster-maturing red with a supple spine of loose-knit tannins, pleasing balance and harmony.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2001
    Jeremy’s score 88/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Some excellent winemaking and very smart oak can’t hide the pruney, stressed nature of the fruit used for this wine. Its spicy cinnamon spice cake aromas and sweet, forward palate of currants, plums and red berries are deeply flavoured and tightly supported by new cedary oak, but the finish lacks length and brightness.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2002
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5
    $170.00

A very good, but very slightly over-ripened shiraz with a meaty fragrance of blackberries, cassis and dark plums, mocha-like oak and undertones of black pepper. Smooth and supple, it’s both fine-grained and deeply fruited, presenting sweet black berry fruits and hints of currant tightly woven about fine, silky tannins and sweet chocolate/vanilla oak. There’s a faint suggestion of dehydration, and the alcoholic strength of 14.5% is slightly at odds with the wine’s elegance and polish.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2003
    Jeremy’s score 90/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A perfumed, floral and slightly meaty shiraz whose cedary fragrance of dark plums, blueberries, blackcurrant, vanilla and chocolate precede a long, tightly knit and focused shiraz that just lacks the brightness and vitality of the best years. It offers deep dark berry flavours which despite a balanced spine of fine-grained tannin just breaks up a fraction at the finish, leaving a slightly rubbery and reductive aftertaste.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2004
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A classic 2004 Australian red of superb, effortless natural balance and elegance. Its deep, heady aromas of liqueur-like cassis, dark plums and berries overlie lightly smoky aromas of smallgoods, dark chocolates and vanilla, with undertones of violets, red berries and currants. Deep, juicy and concentrated, its jujube-like fruit is tightly harnessed with smooth, newish oak and supported by a firm but pliant undercarriage of drying tannins. Long and lavish, it finishes with deep, meaty fruit and lingering suggestions of licorice, spices and dried herbs.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2005
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A joyful, vibrant and supple shiraz whose open and uncomplicated expression of pristine blackberry, cassis and plum-like flavour is lifted by a spicy perfume and the handsome mocha and vanilla presence of new fine-grained French oak. Juicy without being jammy, itÕs smooth and approachable, with a finely crafted, willowy backbone of velvet tannin.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2006
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A richer, plumper and more concentrated RWT which manages to retain its customary elegance and charm. Its sweet, heady bouquet of violets, jujube-like blueberries, blackberries and cassis is backed by cedar/chocolate vanilla oak, while its luscious, silky-smooth palate of fine length and full to medium weight reveals a full spectrum of ripe and just slightly meaty and raisined fruits. ThereÕs plenty of richness, weight and presence, with a lingering impression of juicy flavour and harmony.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2007
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Deep, richly fruited, dark and savoury, this beautifully measured shiraz flaunts its ripeness, polish and balance. Heady, wild and meaty, with a complex bouquet of blackberries, currants, dark plums, roasted meats and sweet gamey oak, itÕs long, smooth and sumptuous, with dense layers of minty dark berry flavours and chocolate oak underpinned by velvet-like fine-grained tannins.

Penfolds Bin 798 RWT Shiraz 2008
    Jeremy’s score 94/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A perfectly constructed Penfolds red likely to need time to discover its true charm and personality. Dense chocolatey aromas of cassis, blackberries cedary oak with undertones of briar, treacle and tar precede a plush concentrated, smooth and oaky palate whose dense spectrum of currants, plums, prunes and small berries are framed by a firm extract of fine, drying tannins. ThereÕs a measure of baked, jammy fruit, but given its intensity, length and richness, it should age impressively.
