  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2016
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Sumptuous and stylish; dark plums, cassis and redcurrants and polished oak backed by notes of baked earth. Long and focused, with a fiery core of impactful fruit and a crunchy spine of drying tannins backed by spicy, meaty undertones, it finishes with drive and structure. A genuine Bin 389.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2017
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Polished, measured and evenly paced, this generously flavoured and classically robust 389 reveals a fiery, earthy, faintly minty bouquet of red berries, blood plums and sweet vanilla oak overlying suggestions of dark olives and roasting pan drippings. Its deep, almost plump core of black, red and blue fruit drives long and earthy over a firmish spine of fine, crunchy tannins, easily carrying its handsome but artfully balanced oak. Although already approachable and with no hard edges, itÕs a long-term classic.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2018
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Smooth and ripe, with polished cedary oak and a fine, drying backbone, this is a Bin 389 lite that lacks its expected weight, drive and structure. Smoky, creamy aromas of cassis, blueberries and blackberries and blue fruits, mocha and dark chocolates precede a relatively simple and skeletal palate that become quite powdery and astringent towards the finish. Despite the stellar scores given by most Australian wine critics, IÕm happy to maintain that while this is a good wine, it pales against the great vintages of this worthy label.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2019
    Jeremy’s score 89/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

What do you get from spending $100 on one of AustraliaÕs signature red wine labels? A simple, juicy and faintly minty bouquet of red and black berries backed by smoky, cedary oak and a forward, marginally hollow palate lacking genuine concentration and drive. ThereÕs some forward brightness and a fine, gravelly spine, but while the wine does reveal more expression with aeration, it appears rather over-made for its modest depth of flavour. Not to be compared in any way to the vintages that made this labelÕs reputation.

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 1990
    Jeremy’s score 94/100

Dusty scents of violets, cassis with smoky, cigarboxy oak, tobacco leaf and dried herbs overlie suggestions of mushrooms and underbrush. A classical South Australian cabernet, with richness and structure, its pleasing length of small bright red and black berry flavour and polished cedary oak overlies a fine, chalky spine, extending seamlessly towards a supple, measured finish.

A finer, lighter Penfolds cabernet whose sweet bouquet of violets, small berries, cedar/chocolate oak reveals a whiff of mint. Supple and elegant, with bright flavours of small berries and plums knit with faintly varnishy oak and moderately firm, ripe tannins, itÕs soft and earthy, finishing with undertones of forest floor.
