  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2004
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A tightly focused, firm and sassy 389 of structure and sophistication. Deeply scented with alluring and lightly spicy aromas of crushed dark berries and cedary oak, this slightly meaty red blend reveals undertones of briar, white pepper, mint and a hint of game. Long and smooth, its intense and dark-fruited palate of cassis, mulberries, cherries and plums is underpinned by a chalky chassis of firm tannin. It slowly reveals nuances of dried herbs and underlying meatiness, while its generous complement of vanilla oak shows some classy integration. It’s a lot more contemporary than the traditional 389, but very impressive, all the same.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2005
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A genuine 389, whose sumptuous depth of vibrant dark fruit knits seamlessly with sweet chestnut/mocha/vanilla oak and a smooth, drying spine of loose-knit tannin. Deep and heady, itÕs scented with violets, liqueured cherries and dried herbs and steeped in flavours of dark plums, blackberries and cassis. Ripe but certainly not overcooked, itÕs supported by a creamy structure of firm, loose-knit tannins, finishing with lingering fruit and a dusty mouthfeel.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2006
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Modern and rather polished Penfolds red whose intense blackberry, cassis, dark plum and dark cherry flavours are handsomely framed by bittersweet chocolate, cedary and smoked oyster-like oak. Slightly leafy on opening, with a whiff of anis and dark pepper, itÕs long, firm and linear, with deep, if rather baked fruit underpinned by meaty undertones and a furry extract of drying tannin. It finishes slightly salty and mineral, without its customary length of flavour.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2007
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Long, dark and assertive, this dense, meaty and riper expression of this style is impressively structured, deeply packed with fruit but also more of a fractionally raw and bruising wine that simply demands time before it ultimately softens. Deeply aromatic, with a dark, smoky presence of plums, blackberries and fresh cedar/vanilla/dark chocolate oak, itÕs backed by nuances of leathery evolution, currants and licorice. Framed by firm, drying tannins, it finishes slightly too raw for a higher rating.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2008
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Deep, dark and sumptuous, itÕs firm, layered and powerful, with a dense, meaty presence of blackberries, briar, currants and dark plums backed by nuances of dark chocolate, prunes and earthy influences. Gripped by an astringent spine of chalky tannins, itÕs uber-concentrated, impressively long and persistent. ItÕs not the most elegant or vibrant Bin 389, but its should meet cellaring expectations.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2009
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A very smooth and plush Bin 389 whose deeply ripened bouquet of pastille-like cassis, raspberries and dark cherries knits tightly with fresh vanilla/cedar oak. Its long, rather polished and velvety palate of sour-edged small black and red berries reveals a faint currant-like note and a hint of baked fruit. It finishes with good but not exceptional length, and represents a significant move in direction for this label.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2010
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Dark and brooding, with layers of deeply ripened fruit and structure, this powerful, long-term red has a lustrous, densely packed and floral bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, cassis and dark plums tightly integrated with smoky, chocolatey vanilla oak and lifted by scents of white pepper and violets. Framed by fine, powdery tannins and given some handsome oak, its rich, bloody palate drips with concentrated flavours of blackberries, blueberries, redcurrants and dark plums, finishing with length and strength.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2011
    Jeremy’s score 91/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Oaky and shiraz-driven, this firm and rather extracted blend has a peppery bouquet of dark plums, cassis and blackberries handsomely backed by assertive notes of mocha and chocolate, smoked meats and a profound mintiness. Beefed up with oak and tannins, itÕs powerfully constructed with a drying, grippy spine beneath its moderately rich expression of fiery, meaty plum and berry flavours. It finishes with a faint thinness in mid palate and lingering notes of roast meats.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2012
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

An exemplary expression of this style, this stylish, smooth and finely balanced red has a deeply fruited and handsomely oaked bouquet of red and black berries with earthy and floral undertones backed by suggestions of cedar, dried herbs and cola. Finely tuned and polished, with a searingly intense length of blackberries, cassis, red berries and dark plums tightly knit with chocolate/cedar oak and firmish, chalky tannins, it finishes long and stylish with ample balance and focus. It will become very velvety with time.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2013
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A sumptuous, polished and deeply ripened expression of this label whose classic aromas of intense black and red berries, tightly knit chocolate/vanilla oak are backed by smoky, meaty notes and suggestions of spice and pepper. Despite the depth and searingly concentration of its berry flavours, the fineness of its tannins means it almost borders on elegance, finishing with a genuine length and crescendo of lingering, fiery fruit and smoky, chocolatey nuances.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2014
    Jeremy’s score 94/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A finer-grained and more elegant Bin 389 that despite its obvious charm lacks the length and drive of the great vintages. Its distinctively floral, peppery and spicy perfume of pristine small dark berries and plums reveals smoky, cedary and chocolatey oak influences plus a hint of mineral. Firmish and full-bodied, itÕs supported by a fine, crunchy spine and unfolds a fiery core of cassis, plum and blackberry flavour that extends with pleasing but not remarkable length.

  • Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2015
    Jeremy’s score 90/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Long and linear, with a peppery, faintly mineral bouquet and a relatively simple presence of black and blue fruits, cedary oak and roasting tray elements underpinned by a powdery spine of drying tannins. Finishing cool and minty, with assertive menthol/eucalypt Wrattonbully-derived notes, itÕs well made but lacks the labelÕs customary intensity and richness.
