Vibrant and juicy, with bright, pastille-like scents of blackberries, cassis, redcurrants and blood plums backed by fresh cedar/chocolate /vanilla oak, itÕs fullish to medium in weight, moderately firm and elegant. ItÕs luscious and flavoursome, but lacks the genuine mid-palate weight and penetration for a higher rating.
A fine, medium to full-bodied shiraz that might not have much to do with the Penfolds brand, but is nevertheless a charmingly smooth and gentle wine whose brightly lit cranberry, redcurrant and blood plum fruits are deftly knit with tight-grained vanilla, creamy and cedary oak and fine, pliant loose-knit tannins. ThereÕs a subtle presence of mint and dried herbs that reflects the coolness of the vintage.
A more measured, elegant and balanced expression of this style whose musky, floral bouquet of fiery red and black fruits reveals some alluring spice and a polished background of smoky cigarboxy oak. ItÕs sumptuously flavoured, with a charming length of fruit underpinned by fine, slatey tannins, finishing with length and poise.
A remarkably tight, focused and refreshing chardonnay from the Penfolds stable, made with a comparatively low contribution from malolactic fermentation. Its complex aromas of grapefruit, lemon and apple reveal undertones of matchstick-like bound sulphide and some pleasing funkiness. Nutty, biscuit-like and vanilla oak plays a sound second fiddle. A clean, bright and crystalline expression of tangy citrus and melon fruit is supported by restrained oak, offering a pleasing and almost fluffy mid-palate. It finishes long and austere, with lingering suggestions of mineral salts and lime juice.
A modern, more restrained and mineral chardonnay whose lively flavours of white peach, nectarine, lychees and tangerine are backed by restrained creamy and nutty notes, plus a floral, waxy aspect. Its rather fluffy palate of brightly-lit fruit finishes with pleasing persistence, clean acids and a note of mineral.
A contemporary Australian chardonnay whose intense peach, nectarine and honeydew melon-like fruit is underpinned by sweet, creamy vanilla oak, slightly herbal cashew-like nuances and a fine, chalky texture. ItÕs initially quite juicy and concentrated, fine and fluffy, but ultimately finishes rather lean and mineral with lemony acids and a hint of smokiness. Slightly too candied for a higher rating.
Fresh, focused and uncomplicated, with a lightly oaked bouquet of white peach, nectarine and apple with nuances of pear and vanilla. ItÕs smooth, creamy and generous, with a tangy brightness of apple and stonefruit flavour finishing crisp and crunchy, with a clean, green apple acidity.
Very shapely and elegant, with a seamless presence of intense flavour, it reveals a delicate bouquet of pristine tropical fruits, grapefruit and melon backed by nuances of smoked meats, minerals and ham hock. Long and fluffy, its soft, gentle palate of pure, fresh fruit finishes with brightness and freshness plus a lingering impression of beeswax.
