Elegant and composed, this ageworthy chardonnay has a pithy bouquet of grapefruit, lemon and fresh vanilla oak backed by briny, chalky undertones and a hint of charcuterie meats. ItÕs long and stylish, with a gentle but fleshy core of vivacious fruit that moves easily along a fine, chalky texture towards a brisk and appropriately taut acidity, finishing with persistent notes of fruit and smoked meats.
A typically stylish, measured and refined chardonnay from Vasse Felix that unfolds a pristine and penetrative bouquet of grapefruit, white peach, melon and lemon knit with fresh vanilla oak and backed by suggestions of cinnamon, ginger, coriander and oyster shell. Delivering pleasing richness of fruit and weight mid-palate, it’s generous, smooth and creamy but is artfully sculpted by a baby powder-like texture and a brittle but approachable acidity. It finishes with a lingering pithiness and savoury, saline aspects.
A dusty, smoky blend whose toasty expression of gooseberries, melon, lychees, passionfruit and sweet vanilla and biscuity oak is underpinned by a suggestion of cut grass. Remarkably aromatic and concentrated, but also fine, creamy and elegant. Wrapped in refreshing citrusy acids, it’s long, clean and racy, finishing with persistent fruit and a nettle-like herbal quality.
A very herbaceous bouquet of nettles, snow peas and capsicum is penetrated by slightly smoky vanilla French oak influences and a fresh presence of gooseberries and melon. ItÕs long and racy, with a fine chalkiness and an underlying minerality, finishing with focus, refreshingly taut acids and a lingering herbaceousness.
A tightly focused, restrained and measured regional wine. Lightly dusted with herbal nuances and a light grassiness, its fresh aromas of gooseberries, lychees and tropical fruits precede a round, generous palate whose vibrant, crystalline fruits are underpinned by a fine minerality. Long and tangy, honed by its minerality, itÕs neatly streamlined towards a tangy crescendo of fruit, finishing with lingering flavour and a tight line of acidity.
Top class, with a complex, alluring bouquet whose charmingly tropical, peachy and gooseberry-like aromas are backed by floral and herbal nuances plus smoky barrel ferment notes and hints of charcuterie meats, sherbet and mineral. ItÕs round and unctuous, with a long, mouthfilling presence of fruit underpinned by a fine chalkiness. Wrapped in lemony acids, it finishes with a lick of slate. Just the sort of thing that Margaret River does best, but could do with more of.
Another slightly herbal, funky and complex release by Virginia WillcockÕs team that backs its creamy, smoky fragrance of punchy peach, melon and tropical fruit with hints of oyster shell and iodine. Tightly underpinned by a fine, dusty texture, itÕs genuinely long, fine and elegant. It reveals a pleasing balance between fruit, oak and a gentle, refreshing acidity before finishing quite briny and savoury.
