Gaffy and Neal Merricks North Chardonnay 2021
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A true vin de garde and a timely slap in the face for the makers and critics who believe it’s impossible to have chardonnay with both finesse and flavour. Piercing aromas of ruby grapefruit, peach and nectarine knit with a subdued, schisty presence of nutty oak and creamy yeast-derived influences, cinnamon, coriander and ginger. Translucently clear, its vivacious and voluminous, with a explosive flash of fruit that eases down a fine, powdery spine towards a brittle, savoury finish wrapped in mouthwatering acids. Superb shape and style – the new Peninsula benchmark. Becomes more mineral with age.

    Jeremy’s score 97/100

    $75.00

Sumptuous, complex and deeply layered, with an explosive, unctuous core of fruit that should be the envy of most modern Australian chardonnay. A wild, heady and profoundly fruitful bouquet of stonefruit, grapefruit, lemon blossom and creamy, nutty oak precedes a luscious, mouthfilling palate that effortlessly moves smooth and penetrative over a fine, powdery backbone, finishing dry and pithy. Remarkably complete, long and measured, it promises a long and rewarding cellaring future.

  • Gaffy and Neal The Peninsula (Formerly Merricks North) Chardonnay 2023
    Jeremy’s score 97/100

    $75.00

Deeply perfumed, with bright aromas of ripe nectarines and citrus knit with creamy, nutty and faintly smoky oak, with nuances of minerals and coriander. Powerfully fruited yet elegant, it’s long and seamless, marrying a powerful core of ruby grapefruit, lemon, pear and nectarine flavours with smoky oak and an appealing minerality. Wrapped in a mouthwatering acidity and underpinned by a deliciously savoury and mineral aspect, it’s stylish and artfully balanced. The palate goes forever, finishing with citrusy acids plus a rare level of intensity, balance and focus. Keep it.

  • Gaffy and Neal The Peninsula (Formerly Merricks North) Chardonnay 2024

    $75.00

A sumptuous, profound and artfully balanced chardonnay built around a powerful core of fruit. Bright and punchy, with an intense, faintly waxy bouquet of lemon, grapefruit, yellow peach and creamy yeast-derived notes, it also reveals a hint of butterscotch. Long, polished and translucently pure, its core of yellow peach and lemon butter unfolds mouthfilling layers of complexity, fruit and texture, soaking up its oak and finishing with dryness and tautness. A true vin de garde, but ready to enjoy now if you’re seeking something special.

    $80.00

A spectacular chardonnay whose voluminous and alluring perfume reveals deep layers of stonefruit, grapefruit and lemon tightly knit with faintly toasty vanilla oak spot lit with complex nuances of spice, creamy nougat and roast chicken pie. Its unctuous core of pristine stonefruit and citrus flavour steamrolls long and clear down a finely textured backbone, driving with power and style towards a fine, focused finish of refreshing and faintly mineral acids. Artfully balanced with smoky oak, it’s quite a masterpiece. Acknowledging the role of Darrin Gaffy in its making, this Chardonnay gets my nod as the finest white wine yet released by Doug Neal.

    $35.00

One of the most vibrant, expressive and vivacious expressions of nebbiolo and related varieties you will see at this price, with a sweet fragrance of redcurrants, red cherries, blood plums and rose petals overlying nuances of musk, briar and a faint earthiness. It’s long and mouthwatering, with a vibrant core of translucently clear red fruits supported by a firm, chalky spine of fine tannins that develop more crunch with breathing. Wrapped in a refreshing acidity, it finishes savoury, with lingering tarry, meathy and earthy notes. Outstanding value.
