Marvellous ripe and luscious, but superbly measured shiraz, steeped in heady aromas of briary small red and black berry fruit and enhanced by a measured maturation in smoky chocolate/vanilla oak. A velvet-smooth and creamy palate presents layer upon layer of ripe cassis, plum and red berry fruit, punctuated by the musky white pepper and licorice flavours of old Barossa vines. Beautifully balanced, and not a dead grape in sight.
Traditional warmer year Barossa red developing more quickly than most under this label, but without a hint of over-ripeness. Sweet earthy aromas of old saddlery, red berries and cherries are interwoven with restrained, dusty cedar and vanilla oak. Soft and creamy, becoming fine and silky at the finish, its bright flavours of cassis, plums and dark cherries, licorice and cloves are showing some earthy maturity.
Very ripe, meaty Barossa shiraz matured in some very assertive vanilla and smoked oyster-like oak. It’s smoky, creamy aromas of sweet, jammy plums and berries reveal riper notes of raisins and currants. Its palate is smooth and silky, with plenty of forward, if slightly cooked fruit qualities before a slightly herbal finish that does lose some intensity. Not as long-term a wine as usual for this label, but it does offer plenty of rustic charm and flavour from a very hot vintage.
Caught somewhere between the rich, old-fashioned Australian ‘burgundy’ style of softness, roundness and structure, and the contemporary Barossa shiraz of intensity, ripeness, warmth and polish, this exceptional wine is unashamedly concentrated and densely packed with deep, dark spicy fruit. It’s warm and spirity, with a heady, spicy and peppery bouquet steeped in aromas of dark plums, cassis and blackberries, backed by chocolate/walnut oak and meaty undertones of game and leather. Its succulent, creamy palate is deeper than an ocean trench, saturated with vibrant dark fruit flavours, spice and sweet coffee/mocha oak. Framed by fine, velvet-smooth tannins, it’s a near-perfect example of the popular expression of super-ripe Barossa shiraz.
A finely crafted, its very meaty and leathery wine from a challenging vintage. Its pungent, meaty and slightly cooked, currant-like aromas reveal reductive, earthy undertones, restrained cedar/vanilla oak and nuances of dried herbs, mint and menthol. Its sumptuous, long and richly flavoured palate of cassis, plums and faintly dehydrated flavours of currant and raisins is tightly supported by oak and pliant tannins. Has enough fruit to age well, and should become very meaty and leathery.
A classic, long-living example of why 2004 is so highly rated. Its deep, brambly aromas of dark cherries, blueberries, blackberries, sweet coconut ice/vanilla oak overlie meaty, smoky and slightly reductive complexity. Deeply and richly layered, it’s ripe and juicy, delivering a warm and fractionally spirity expression of small berries and smoky undertones framed by firm but velvet-smooth and loose-knit tannins. It’s natural and balanced, without a hint of overcooked fruit.
A developing, leathery bouquet of polished furniture, red plums, redcurrants, cloves and cinnamon reveals undertones of game meats, mint and menthol. ItÕs modestly full to medium in weight, with a smooth, polished and elegant palate whose confiture-like berry/plum fruit finishes with a hint of raisin. Supported by fine, pliant tannins, it presents a pleasing balance between fruit and oak.
A more cooked and meaty Basket Press that lacks its usual fruit sweetness and length. Its dark, meaty and chocolate-like bouquet of currants, plums and berries is lifted by sweet, perfumed oak but retains a rather baked aspect. Its rich, inky palate of meaty dark fruit, mint and menthol is underpinned by chunky, drying tannins and finishes slightly short.
Very charming, balanced and approachable, but with genuine structure and strength, this finely balanced shiraz belies the heat of its vintage with merely a hint of raisined fruit at the very finish. ItÕs spicy, dark-fruited and rather meaty, with a fresh, floral fragrance backed by hints of cedar, earth and chocolate plus a trace of polished leather. Deep and dark, with a pleasing length of spicy red and black berry flavours supported by a fine, dusty undercarriage, it finishes with a lingering core of fruit and savoury, meaty influences.
Ripe and balanced with a polished integration between plump, juicy flavours of blackcurrants, blackberries, raspberries and dark plums, fresh cedar/chocolate oak and dusty, drying tannins. Lifted by scents of musk and suede leather, itÕs briary and smoky, long and elegant with a lingering impression of fruit and meaty complexity.
A reserved, elegant and fine-grained expression of this signature wine whose dark, musky and sweetly perfumed bouquet of cassis, blood plums, raspberries and violets is augmented by aromatic, fine-grained oak and backed by a hint of cherry liqueur. ItÕs supple and finely balanced, with a long and brightly lit expression of small black, blue and red berry flavour framed by fine, crunchy tannins and deftly knit with gentle oak.
Stylish and deeply layered, this refined, elegant Barossa shiraz has a musky, peppery and exotically spicy bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, cassis and dark plums backed by smoky, cedary and vanilla oak with meaty, suede leather undertones. It’s full-flavoured, long and smooth, with brightly lit, confiture-like fruit of piercing intensity and translucent brightness underpinned by silky tannins and tightly knit with dusty oak. It’s likely to become more spicy and savoury with time.
