A fiery, gamey bouquet of blackberries, dark cherries, musky spices and briar is lifted by a whiff of pepper and a hint of polished leather. Without being assertive, itÕs forward and flavoursome, with an initial impact of intense small berry flavour, spicy character and meaty complexity supported by a chewy, supple backbone.
A majestic shiraz whose spicy bouquet is laced in a wild, brambly perfume of violets, cassis, blackberries and blueberries, with undertones of graphite, minerals and fresh chocolate/vanilla oak. Deeply flavoured and juicy, itÕs effortlessly smooth and elegant, with a pure length of wild, dark and concentrated shiraz fruit tightly integrated with fine, bony tannins, finishing with delightful focus and elegance.
Quite a herbaceous wine that does little credit to its label. Sweet, floral aromas of dark plums, dark chocolates, cassis and smoked bacon reveal herbaceous undertones of snow peas and green beans. Lacking genuine structure and definition, itÕs lean, green-edged and angular, with modest if pretty and lively berry fruit that struggles to overcome its raw, sappy and metallic extract. Too edgy, lacking in ripeness and a surprising release.
Quite a different wine from the rest of this Penfolds release, this Ð oak aside Ð is more of an Old World wine. On one hand it delivers a vivacious purity and intensity, on the other a smoky, bony and more perfumed aspect. Scented with bright aromas of cassis, raspberries, violets and earthy nuances, plus a hint of mint and menthol, itÕs backed by some quality but assertive oak. Tightly knit with chocolate oak, it bursts with luscious, palate-staining and almost bloody flavours of dark fruits before finishing with length, refreshing acidity and focus.
Slightly old-fashioned, this firm, long-living shiraz has a complex, fiery and meaty perfume of dark berries and plums, cinnamon and white pepper lifted by sweet floral notes. Stacked with forward flavours of black and red fruits backed by meaty roasting tray notes, itÕs supported by a strong, drying spine and smoky vanilla/dark chocolate oak. Packed with character, it just lacks the core and drive for an even higher rating.
A classic Magill Ð dark and densely packed with meaty but luscious fruit tightly knit with firm, drying tannins, finishing with length and fiery expression. Dark plums, cassis, dark olives and eastern spices overlie scents of graphite and mineral. Wonderfully balanced, complete and unashamedly textural, itÕs a classic expression of warm site shiraz in a cooler season, carrying with it unexpected finesse and balance.
Ripe and jammy, with a relatively simple expression of mulberries, cassis, raspberries and restrained oak, itÕs sweetly fruited but lacks genuine drive down the palate. Supported by fine, pliant but firmish tannins, it shows some smart winemaking but is let down by the quality of the vintage.
It takes time to unfold, but this smoky and faintly sour-edged shiraz reveals a spicy bouquet of briary redcurrants, dark plums, baked earth and roasting meat juices backed by scents of dark flowers and nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. Fullish to medium in weight, its deep, meaty core of black and red fruits extends over a firm, crunchy backbone of mineral tannins, finishing with length and drive.
Rather stressed and raisined, with a dark, meaty bouquet of liqueur chocolate fruit and smoky mocha oak. ItÕs a very un-Penfolds wine, with a very fine, powdery backbone underpinning its simple forward expression of flavour, becoming dull and stewy, hollow and lacking intensity as its charry, chocolatey oak overwhelms its lack of fruit.
