Here’s a superbly crafted claret; generous and firm with fully controlled grunt. A deep red, laden with wild, earthy small red and black berries plus sweet cedary oak. Long, rich and stylish, with superbly integrated ripe fruits, creamy oak and fine tannins plus mint and capsicum to add complexity.
An assertive, firm, structured and even majestic cabernet that slowly unfolds layers of fruit sweetness and complexity. ItÕs ageing very slowly indeed, but reveals a classical cabernet bouquet of violets, woodsmoke, dark berries and cigarboxes backed by deep earthy undertones, a hint of dried herbs and a touch of meatiness. Powerfully fruited but elegant, itÕs dark and fiery, with a deep core of intense ripe fruit and cedary oak that eases its way over a slightly raw and edgy spine of firm, drying extract. While it might lack a little in polish, it will certainly age tremendously over the next decade and more. Keep it.
Complex, long-term Margaret River cabernet whose briary expression of small berry fruit and smoky cedary oak overlies a thread of herby greenness which I expect to evolve into classical cigarboxy bottle-matured characters. Too a degree it’s earthy and rustic, but its seamless integration with firm, fine-grained tannins shows it’s something of an aristocrat as well.
A wine played in two parts. At once meaty, wild and leathery, but also with a tightly-knit underswell of succulent, brightly flavoured small berry fruits. There’s a herbal, capsicum-like note to its briary aromas of cassis and raspberries, with earthy regional influences and cedar/vanilla oak qualities playing second violin. It’s long and firm, packed with distinctive small fruits before an astringent and drying finish of pliant tannins. It has aged superbly and has many, many years ahead.
Old-fashioned and developed earthy, leathery aromas of dark plums, dark olives and smoky, cedar-like oak, with just a suggestion of currants and capsicum. Lavish, luscious palate whose deep, dark fruit flavours of plums and cassis are presented in a riper, juicier expression of Margaret River cabernet. Not for the super-long term, but both generous and refined.
Cape Mentelle’s return to prominence with cabernet sauvignon continues with this alluringly complex and tightly crafted long-term wine. Its dusty, cigarboxy bouquet of cassis and dark plums, dark olives and cedar/vanilla oak reveals meaty undertones and aromatic floral qualities. Smooth and silky, it’s firm and fine-grained; a structured wine whose slightly closed and brooding core of blackberries, cassis and plums is tightly interwoven with tannin and oak.
