A slightly reductive, but deep, dark and brooding shiraz built around tremendously concentrated dark but bright minty plum/cassis fruit, and augmented by lightly vanilla and cedary characters derived from larger oak casks. Very tannic, but soft and creamy, it’s long and savoury, with a finish of salted nuts and firm grip. Needs time.
Following the freakish 1996 wine isn’t easy, but the 1997 St Henri is a generously flavoured and competent, if slightly simple and porty successor with attractively spicy, minty and boiled confection-like aromas of red and black berries. Typically backward in the oak department, it’s soft and supple, with vibrant dark plum and cherry fruit, tightly-knit tannins and a savoury finish.
Deep leathery aromas of bitumen, chocolate, dark cherries, plums and blackberries, scented with violets and spices. Long, succulent and savoury, with vibrant dark sour-edged and lightly salty fruits wound around a firm spine of powdery tannins. Big, but elegant, without a hint of overripeness or dead fruit.
One of the finest releases ever of this benchmark shiraz, with an alluring and slightly meaty fragrance of dark plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, backed by spicy and smoky undertones. Made in the traditional velvet-smooth Australian ‘burgundy’ style, it’s soft and juicy, with a deeply flavoured and layered palate whose deep, dark core of vibrant dark fruit flavours is tightly wrapped in fine, approachable tannins. Marvellously long, it finishes with freshness and acidity, with underlying hints of mineral.
Well-mannered, smooth and savoury, this rich and sumptuous shiraz delivers plenty of ripe and just very slightly baked fruit framed by typically smooth and velvet-like tannin. There’s a meaty, pungent aspect about its slightly spirity aromas of blackberries, dark plums, raspberries and prunes, while its rich, thick and smoky palate of meaty dark fruits, raisins and currants finishes savoury but surprisingly fresh and vibrant, with a lingering core of persistent flavour.
