An adventure in modern chardonnay, whose appealing texture, weight and funky complexity are right on the contemporary style button. Its pungent and smoky bouquet of melon, quince and cumquat reveal nuances of lemon sherbet, toasty oak and smoked ham. ItÕs forward, rich and unctuous, with a pleasing fatness and weight that eases back into a fine, tight and austere finish of lingering citrus and tropical flavours. But for a hint of candied fruit it would rate even higher.
Rather wild and woolly, itÕs smoky, funky and leesy, with evolved, complex and cheesy aromas lifted by scents of grapefruit, melon and cumquat. Presently a little angular, its long, intense core of tangy fruit ties neatly together, finishing quite savoury and mineral with a taut, racy acidity and a pronounced briny aspect.
The pick of PenfoldsÕ white crop is a wild, complex, funky and delightfully composed chardonnay with excellent length, slatey texture and exemplary balance. Smoky and complex, with aromas of melon and fig, ginger and cloves, itÕs wild, spicy and custard-like, but remains underpinned by penetrative fruit and floral scents. ItÕs long, elegant and brightly lit, with a focused and funky mouthfeel of intense fruit backed by spicy, chalky notes, finishing briny and mineral, with a persistent core of flavour.
Supple, stylish and elegant, this long, focused and savoury chardonnay marries an intense presence of melon, mango and paw paw flavour with creamy, bubblegum-like oak and meaty, creamy complexity. Underpinned by a fine, gentle chalkiness, itÕs toasty, spicy and brightly lit, finishing with a fine length of tropical flavour, savoury minerality and pronounced regional custard-like influences.
A first-rate young chardonnay whose mineral fragrance of sweet white flowers, ruby grapefruit, melon and white peach is underpinned by sweet, creamy and buttery oak plus a regional hint of custard. ItÕs long and translucent, sporting a pure, pristine core of crystalline grapefruit, melon and lemon flavour that extends over a fine-grained chalky spine towards a tightly drilled, faintly briny finish of focus and precision. Finely balanced and spotlessly made.
A lean, taut and focused chardonnay whose sweetly oaked bouquet of peach, melon and green apple overlies creamy, faintly mineral and custard-like notes as well as a hint of vanilla oak. ItÕs slightly candied and forward, becoming long and austere down the palate, slowly opening with more richness and roundness of fruit before finishing with assertive, lemony and faintly metallic acids. Perhaps lacking its customary core of fruit, but should flesh out further in the bottle.
Artfully balanced, already deeply complex and alluring, this is a slightly less funky expression of this wine whose wild, heady fragrance of grapefruit, smoked meats, creamy yeast-derived notes is lifted by a bright floral scent. ItÕs long and mouthfilling, with an unctuous presence of tangy lemon and grapefruit flavours whose core extends long and focused towards a taut, briny finish of brisk, tightly focused acidity.
Handsomely oaked, with a restrained bouquet of peaches, melon and cream, floral and mineral aspects plus a whiff of custard. Round and generous, itÕs elegant and restrained, with a gentle presence of melon, peach and grapefruit-like flavour rather overawed by its oak but finishing with clean acidity and revealing some pleasing smoky and mineral complexity.
Floral and spicy; grapefruit, peach and melon with undertones of coriander, bath salts and nougat; round and savoury with matchstick oak.
Delicate scents of grapefruit, peach and vanilla oak backed by suggestions of cinnamon and charcuterie meats precede a palate whose forward presence of fruit dries out quickly, extends in rather a thin, clipped fashion over a bath salt-like minerality towards a dry, refreshing and pithy finish. Underrepresented in the fruit department for a higher rating.
Stripped and metallic, with smoky aromas of green olives and grapefruit with undertones of vanilla, minerals and charcuterie meats. After some initial intensity the palate becomes short and bitter, finishing raw and edgy with a lingering grippy extract.
