  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 1994
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

The best and most refined John Riddoch for some seasons and a clear move away from the porty, extracted styles of the early 1990s, this wine loses nothing for concentration and intensity of flavour. Sweet plums and blackcurrants combine with textured chocolate/cedar/vanilla oak in a richly structured but elegant palate with firm, fine-grained tannins. It finishes quite savoury, with exceptional length. A wine for enjoyment as much as for admiration.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 1997
    Jeremy’s score 87/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

I can’t avoid the feeling that this wine was made according to formula rather than fruit. It’s overworked, almost as if its makers wanted a McLaren Vale wine rather than a Coonawarra wine, with unusually cooked plum, prune and cassis flavours and lashings of hard, dusty French oak. There’s good intensity up front, but a hollow, oaky mid palate, while the tannins are simply out of balance. Contrived and unnatural.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 1999
    Jeremy’s score 97/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Deep dark scents of plums, dark olives, mulberries and blackcurrants, with a dusty, earthy background of sweet leather, chocolate and cloves. Presently a little raw and angular, but destined to soften and integrate, its firm, drying and powdery palate reveals a plush core of intense dark fruit. More fruit sweetness than the comparatively subdued 1998 vintage.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
    Jeremy’s score 93/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A very elegant, tightly structured and refined John Riddoch that from a stylistic perspective is the closest release to the inaugural 1982 vintage of the wine. Its cedary aromas of cassis, plums and dark chocolate are backed by hints of dark olives and a capsicum-like herbaceousness. The firm, dusty palate reveals pristine berry and plum-like fruit tightly knit with very fine and stylish tannins and dark chocolate oak. It’s long, firm and tight, but also reveals leafy and herbal undertones that are just a little too evident at the finish for a higher rating. Terrific winemaking from an improving vineyard resource.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

    $75.00

Deep, dark and ruby; perfumed, wild and floral. Deep layers of cassis, violets, mulberries and blackberries knit tightly with sweet dark chocolate/cedar oak, easing into a tight, powdery backbone of dusty tannin that provides an elegant, pliant structure. Long, smooth and brightly lit, it finishes with great finesse and balance. Very polished indeed.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Exceptionally harmonious, complete and elegant, with deep, dense layers of aroma and flavour. A heady perfume of violets and iris precedes a long, firm and seamless palate that deftly knits its alluring blackberry, cassis and dark plum flavours with dark chocolate/cedar/vanilla oak, undertones of dried herbs and black olives and an assertive spine of fine-grained tannin. It finishes with poise and a lingering, pristine core of sour-edged flavour.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
    Jeremy’s score 95/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

Strong and handsomely oaked, this assertive, long-term cabernet unfolds deep layers of fruit and perfume, with intense but earthy aromas of cassis, briar and spicy, slightly meaty cooperage backed by nuances of briar and dried herbs. ItÕs firm but pliant, with a deep, spotless presence of cassis, mulberries and dark plums tightly knit with fine-grained, chocolate/savoury oak, finishing with exceptional length and lingering nuances of cola and herbs.

  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
    Jeremy’s score 96/100

    Rated 0 out of 5

A finely honed and classically drilled long-term cabernet whose heady, floral and sweetly oaked bouquet of cassis, mulberries, dark plums, cedar and chocolate reveal undertones of dried herbs and violets. Deeply ripened, its long, complete presence of black and blue berries and plums knits tightly with creamy cedar oak, overlying a firm, powerfully structured spine of graphite-like tannins, finishing quite savoury with lingering notes of minerals and a hint of leather.
