It might lack its customary richness, but this is a fine effort from a hot year. Fiery aromas of dark plums, blackberries and restrained cedar/vanilla oak with undertones of cloves, nutmeg and baked earth precede a firm, dark and minty palate. Robust and astringent, with a sound length of cassis, blackberries and chocolatey oak, it finishes fractionally raw-edged, with lingering suggestions of menthol. It needs time.

Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie is a small dryland vineyard that has a healthy reputation for its deeply layered and intensely flavoured Shiraz and its occasionally superlative Cabernet. Like many other vineyards in drought-affected regions, it has struggled in the first decade of this century to produce the depth and brightness of fruit of which we know it is capable, coming back into top form with the 2012 collection. The Chardonnay from 2013 has some delightful complexity and a charming future, but the Shiraz and Cabernet from the same vintage lacks their customary lustre and polish.
