Baileys of Glenrowan 1920’s Block Organic Shiraz 2001

Ageing, rather dehydrated shiraz whose meaty, tarry aromas of berries, currants and prunes reveal assertive oak and earthy, leathery undertones. Moderately full in weight, it’s firm and tannic, with a meaty, up-front palate of concentrated but tiring fruit, drying out towards the finish.

Baileys of Glenrowan
In December 2017 this remarkable brand joined Morris of Rutherglen as part of the expanding Casella Family Brands empire. From all angles this is a great outcome for Baileys and one that will give its remarkable wines more focus and attention. Today Baileys now rivals the best of warm inland Australian wines. It now has a stable of four exemplary shirazes (including the new Varley label), of which my favourite, the 1920s Block, is bordering on 4 stars -Ę an extraordinary effort for a table wine from this region. All the reds, the Durif and Petite Sirah included, combine a remarkable level of earthy, meaty development that entirely complements the purity and expression of their fruit. The pick of the current releases is the 2014 Varley Shiraz (95/100, drink 2034-2044+), a superbly presented wine for the ultra-long term. Baileys also offers a charming cellar door experience.
