Profoundly floral, mustky and complex, with scents of dark flowers, blackberries, redcurrants, blood plums and underbrush backed by nuances of mineral and citrus oil. Deeply but not over-ripened, it's long and luscious, delivering a varietally correct expression of black and red fruits, extending down a fine, drying undercarriage before a finish of textural, savoury qualities. Very, very impressive indeed, because I'm sure that had I tasted it blind I would have picked it as from Langhe. With confidence.

Dr Brian Freeman, formerly the professor of Wine Science at the Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, planted a small vineyard in the Hilltops region to varieties including rondinella and corvina, the grapes behind ItalyŐs Amarone and Valpolicella wines. After harvest, some of the fruit is layered on racks and gently heated in air tunnels at 40ˇC for three days in a prune dehydrator. Rondinella is also used to make one of AustraliaŐs more distinctive rosŽ styles, while the 2012 and 2013 vintages of the Pinot Gris Plus white blend has shown me the creamy, savoury complexity and evolved perfume that Brian and Xanthe Freeman have been working towards.
