Penley Estate
Penley Estate is a small but serious Coonawarra maker of principally rich and briary reds from cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz. Penley's reds donŐt typically fit the classic, leaner and longer-term Coonawarra mould, but instead make for a sumptuous, smooth and earlier-drinking experience. There's been a small but positive move in recent wines to bring alcoholic strengths back under 15%, and the immediate improvement in balance and freshness has been reinforced through the premier 2012 reds, especially the Steyning Cabernet Sauvignon, the company's finest wine yet. My only concern over the three vintages of Steyning I have recently tasted relates to their corks, none of which would enable any of the bottles I opened to reach their full potential Đ not even close, to be honest.
