Giaconda Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Rick Kinzbrunner is delighted with his move towards ‘super quality’ thin stave Bordeaux ‘Chateau’ barriques, which impart oak influence more quickly than other casks. The advantage he enjoys is that he is now satisfied with the level of oak expression in a wine after just 18 months of maturation, enabling him to bottle the Cabernet in a ‘fresher’ state and six months earlier than in the past. The wild, heady aromas of dark plums, violets, mint and cassis, and the piercingly intense ripe fruit on the creamy, cedary palate of the 1998 Cabernet reflect this change of approach. The oak is clearly fine-grained, tight and toasty, the tannins fine and powdery, the finish long and savoury. It’s a very stylish, elegant wine of purity and complexity.
