Slightly jammy and overcropped, but with good flavour and varietal character, it presents appealing juicy cherry, dark plum and mulberry flavours and a fine slatey backbone. Finishing savoury, it's earthy and meaty but rather too hollow for a higher rating.

Greenstone Vineyards
A unique collaboration between an Italian winemaker, a Canadian-born importer into the UK market of Italian wine and an Australian grape grower, Greenstone changed hands in the first half of 2015. It remains to be seen what will happen to its future and presence in Australia. Mark Walpole found the site for the vineyard in 2002 and a year later 10 ha of shiraz were in the ground. One ha each of tempranillo and monastrell were planted the following year, plus another 8 ha of shiraz. The single hectare of sangiovese was planted in 2005. The vineyard is close-planted to about double the usual Australian density. Greenstone is forging a savoury, meaty style with a compactness and elegance of fruit that stands it apart from all but the finest other Heathcote makers. The wines are long-living, finely balanced and savoury. They're totally convincing and only the finest vintages are bottled under the varietal names, which effectively makes them a 'reserve' level.
