The Wingara Wine Group, owner of the Katnook Estate, Riddoch and Deakin Estate labels, has sold 60% of its ownership to Spanish winemaker Freixenet for an undisclosed figure. The remaining 40% is to be retained by the Yunghanns family trust, controlled by present chief executive David Yunghanns and his sister Sarah Mahon. Wingara’s turnover is in the range of $35 million. Pedro Ferrer, Freixenet’s chief executive, says that Wingara’s present management team will be retained. His company’s previous engagement with Australian wine was to take legal action to force Peter Gheradi, the founder of Voyager Estate, to change its original name from Freycinet.
