Vintage Report, Moss Wood buys Ribbon Vale

It looks as if the Margaret River vintage will be short and sharp. December was exceptionally hot, while conditions eased in January, providing four inches of rain between clear and sunny days. Unirrigated vineyards should make average yields. Chardonnay flavours look good, although there has been light botrytis in the region. Pinot noir is less impressive as skins have become leathery under the hot sun experienced this season, while cabernet sauvignon looks especially promising. So far, so good for the Great Southern, where misty rains in late February have encouraged some botrytis and powdery mildew. Flavours are good, although warm, humid conditions will require more direct sun for the vintage to really excel. It’s early days, but riesling and chardonnay both look encouraging, with sauvignon blanc a little further behind. The prestigious Margaret River winery of Moss Wood has assumed control of the adjacent 17 acre Ribbon Vale vineyard and winery without settlement at the time of writing. Although the two properties will share vineyard equipment and production will ultimately be consolidated at Moss Wood, Keith Mugford intends that Ribbon Vale will retain its individual vineyard status. Another eight acres of vines are likely to be planted at Ribbon Vale.
