One of Australia’s benchmark wines, Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon 1993 (18.7, drink 2001-2005+) swept the pool at the recent Royal Sydney Wine Show, collecting three trophies including White Wine of the Show and Wine of the Show. I’m still amazed at how few people outside New South Wales take wines like this seriously, something I clearly share with this year’s Sydney judges. Top class Hunter semillon is the most individual and special of all Australian dry white wines and has no equivalent anywhere in the world.
