Not without concern do I report that as far as labelling is concerned, the proportion of grape juice concentrate that can be added to wine is now measured according to volume, with out consideration of the degree of its concentration. The use of concentrate is by no means restricted to cheap or bulk wine, especially in cooler and more marginal areas that focus on the premium market. So a maker can add 1,000 litres of double strength concentrate, the equivalent of 2,000 litres of wine, but measure it only as 1,000 litres of addition. While it is extremely unlikely that this decision will threaten the validity of the Label Integrity Program’s 85% minimum requirements, it provides substantial incentive to add concentrate. Chapitalisation? Who needs it?
