Be very, very careful before you buy 2008 Bordeaux on indent. The risks are simply not worth it. Despite the fact that fine conditions through September and October saved the vintage, there have been no reports from any credible source that place its wines in the ‘must have’ category. The view from Europe is that the wines are likely to be no more expensive once they are ultimately finished and released to the market. The Ultimo Wine Centre’s John Osbeiston agrees, and expects some ‘pretty significant’ falls in price. ‘Today, with the high value of the Euro against the Australian dollar, the poor financial climate around the world and historically high prices, it’s not a very good environment to buy’, he says. ‘Prices are coming off top end wines, as buyers and waiting and seeing what happens. This year’s en primeur looks like a hard slog. In fact, the 2008 wines could well be cheaper in two years time given the way the dollar might go. If you really want them, it might be wiser to wait for then and buy the wines from supermarkets in France.’
