This year’s fourth edition of the fully-revised Rewards of Patience book of Penfolds’ tasting notes and history is perhaps the best yet. Each of Penfold’s wines, from Rawson’s Retreat to Grange and Yattarna, is presented in year-by-year detail with more than 300 tasting notes and quotables from an interesting and diverse collection of tasters whose views were cobbled together by Langton’s Andrew Caillard MW. Given that the book presents an optimistic view of everything it contains, and given that there are no scores presented, it still manages to be a very worthy and genuine effort to provide independent commentary on Penfolds’ wine heritage. Frankly, everyone seriously interested in Australian wine needs it.
