Former Pipers Brook and Yarra Ridge winemaker Peter Steer, who in recent years has worked in global food manufacturing, has become Taltarni’s chief executive. His appointment follows the very short time that Simon Tallent held the post. Interestingly, Steer’s return to the wine industry follows the arrival on my desk of a press release about the latest Yarra Ridge Pinot Noir, which claims it to be the best ever made at that winery. It isn’t. Steer himself made handsomely the best Yarra Ridge pinot noir ever, way back in 1989. Perhaps there might yet be a Taltarni Pinot Noir, from northern Tasmanian fruit?
