Want to know how much of an impact Australian wine is having on UK drinkers? Five of the top ten wine brands sold in the UK by both volume and value are Australian, including first and second on both lists. A feature by Andy Knott in a document entitled ‘The Agency Report – Building Brands in the UK Market’ that comes attached to the June 2003 issue of international wine business magazine Drinks Business includes some interesting data from ACNeilsen. According to ACNeilsen, Jacob’s Creek has long been surpassed as the UK’s No. 1 wine brand by volume and value by none other than Hardys, under which banner the agency has lumped Banrock Station, Nottage Hill, Stamp and VR (its Varietal Range). With these brands taking spots one and two, Lindemans comes in at six for volume and value, Rosemount at eight by volume and seven by value, and Penfolds at ten by volume and nine by value. Some brief calculations reveal that of these brands the one getting the most return per bottle is Rosemount (A$172 per 9 litre case), followed by Penfolds (A$162), Jacob’s Creek ($137), Lindemans (A$134) and Hardys ($121).
