Permit me to reprint exactly from the press information which accompanied the release of T’Gallant’s Pinot Grigio 1999: ‘Clean, refreshing salt air and woodsmoke are the benchmark aromas of T’Gallant Pinot Grigio. The low-yielding, dry vintage of 1999 has produced a wine that is piquant, savoury and strong. The sensation is one of licking the inside of an oyster shell.’ Now, wait for it: ‘The drinker is compelled to eat joyfully at the table.’ Compelled!? To eat joyfully!? Personally, having tasted it, I’d find that a challenge. The only maritime connection I could find was of dirty salty stale seaweed. Otherwise, the wine is broad, rather hot and shapeless, hampered by a sweaty sulphide influence. I rate it at 14.8 and it retails around $19. But remember, you are verboten not to have fun ven surfing it at ze tafel!!!
