St Hugo Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2013

A polished and stylish blend whose vibrant, almost jammy bouquet of blood plums, cranberries, blueberries and blackberries is picked up by wild, heady and floral notes and backed by musky, faintly funky and earthy undertones. Its smooth, luscious presence of gentle but generous fruit overlies a fine, dusty spine of loose-knit tannins, finishing soft and refreshing with finely crafted balance and restraint.

Winery

St Hugo
St Hugo, initially created as part of the 'Saints' range of Orlando, spent a few years under the Jacob's Creek brand before recently being given a brand of its own. Naturally, it features the Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon we have known for so long, augmented by a Shiraz and Grenache Shiraz Mataro from the Barossa Valley plus a Barossa-Coonawarra marriage of shiraz and cabernet. At the top of the tree sit two very special wines under the 'Vetus Purum' tag – outstanding reserve grade wines from Coonawarra cabernet (2010: 96/100, drink 2030-2040+) and Barossa shiraz (2010: 96/100, drink 2022-2030+). The brand's exact fate is a little uncertain right now and will become clearer once the pending merge between Pernod Ricard's wine division adn Accolade Wines has settled down.
