Slightly awkward and disjointed in its youth, this rather wild and funky pinot has everything it needs to appear quite impressive over the medium term. Its unusual confectionary-like aromas of raspberries, cherries and quince reveal smoky, charcuterie-like undertones. Its savoury palate of plum and maraschino cherries is quite fine and restrained, but is underpinned by firm, drying bony tannins. Give it time.

Giant Steps
Phil Sexton, an experienced operator in the wine, brewing and hospitality industries, has set up camp in a very major way at Healesville in the Yarra Valley, with the spectacular Innocent Bystander winery and hospitality centre, home to the Giants Creek range. Sourcing from several different vineyards whose wines are vinified and sold separately, the brand continues to fashion chardonnay and pinot noir of ever-increasing style and elegance. The steady improvement of the Sexton Vineyard and Tarraford Chardonnays over recent years is reflected by their elevated ratings.
