Somewhat a dirtier, leesier and more interesting Penfolds chardonnay reflecting a more natural approach in the winery, but the wine’s forward and rather brassy peachy, melon, apple and mango fruit is rather overshadowed by toasty new French oak. Good fattiness, texture and zesty acidity, but lacking the length of fruit to justify its handling.
More evidence that Penfolds winemakers are more deftly using oak with white wine. A lively, approachable chardonnay whose lingering, creamy palate finishes with refreshing mineral acids, it’s pleasingly dominated by citrus and white peach fruit qualities, with a support cast of cashew and green olive complexity, plus buttery, nutty and lightly toasted oak.
Perhaps a little clinical and contrived, this remains a pleasing wine whose ripe peach, green melon and lemony fruit is augmented by an array of winemaking artefact. The nose is delicate but quite complex, with nutty, bacon and buttery qualities. Forward and toasty, with a ripe, fleshy texture and sweet oak, there’s a lightly oxidative aspect to the palate that’s expressed as sweet toffee and caramel flavour.
A remarkably tight, focused and refreshing chardonnay from the Penfolds stable, made with a comparatively low contribution from malolactic fermentation. Its complex aromas of grapefruit, lemon and apple reveal undertones of matchstick-like bound sulphide and some pleasing funkiness. Nutty, biscuit-like and vanilla oak plays a sound second fiddle. A clean, bright and crystalline expression of tangy citrus and melon fruit is supported by restrained oak, offering a pleasing and almost fluffy mid-palate. It finishes long and austere, with lingering suggestions of mineral salts and lime juice.
A modern, more restrained and mineral chardonnay whose lively flavours of white peach, nectarine, lychees and tangerine are backed by restrained creamy and nutty notes, plus a floral, waxy aspect. Its rather fluffy palate of brightly-lit fruit finishes with pleasing persistence, clean acids and a note of mineral.
A contemporary Australian chardonnay whose intense peach, nectarine and honeydew melon-like fruit is underpinned by sweet, creamy vanilla oak, slightly herbal cashew-like nuances and a fine, chalky texture. ItÕs initially quite juicy and concentrated, fine and fluffy, but ultimately finishes rather lean and mineral with lemony acids and a hint of smokiness. Slightly too candied for a higher rating.
Fresh, focused and uncomplicated, with a lightly oaked bouquet of white peach, nectarine and apple with nuances of pear and vanilla. ItÕs smooth, creamy and generous, with a tangy brightness of apple and stonefruit flavour finishing crisp and crunchy, with a clean, green apple acidity.
Very shapely and elegant, with a seamless presence of intense flavour, it reveals a delicate bouquet of pristine tropical fruits, grapefruit and melon backed by nuances of smoked meats, minerals and ham hock. Long and fluffy, its soft, gentle palate of pure, fresh fruit finishes with brightness and freshness plus a lingering impression of beeswax.
