This much-anticipated release from Brian Croser resembles more a finer and more elegant Penfolds-style red with a foot off the tannin pedal than a Petaluma Coonawarra. It’s the first Tapanappa release from the mature and highly respected old Koppamurra vineyard. Scented with cassis, dark plums, cedar and plain chocolate, it delivers a lightly smoky, long, seamless and willowy expression of fully ripened fruit, fine powdery oak and tight-knit tannin. There’s more of an accent of cassis and dark cherry on the palate, while it finishes long, fine and savoury. Beautifully balanced, structured and focused; sure to develop very well.
Long, fine-grained and savoury, with a spicy, minty and menthol-like bouquet of small black and red berries, violets and chocolate/cedar oak with smoky mocha undertones. Sumptuously ripened, its deep palate of dark plums and berries, briar and woodsmoke is underpinned by a loose-knit undercarriage of firm tannin and backed by savoury French oak. With the faintest hint of under and overripened fruit, it builds in intensity towards its lingering finish.
A polished, if rather jammy and slightly baked oaky dry red that slowly opens out to reveal a deep, underlying core of juicy, ripe fruit. Its meaty, minty bouquet of blackberries, dark cherries, plums and cedar/chocolate/vanilla oak reveals nuances of baked earth. Sumptuously and profoundly ripened, bordering porty, its deep, dark fruit and smooth oak are underpinned by firmish, fine-grained tannins. It needs plenty of aeration to flesh out its mid palate.
Heavy-handed, and soupy, with a meaty spectrum of currants and raisins backed by smoky, raw mocha/chocolate oak, roast walnuts and briar. Spicy and savoury, itÕs dark-fruited, rather cooked but out of balance, lacking the density of fruit to handle its level of cooperage.
Tiring and showing signs of age, with a sweet, fiery bouquet of cassis, blackberries and polished leathery backed by dusty, chocolatey and herbal nuances. ItÕs supported by a slightly raw and green-edged spine of loose-knit tannin and while itÕs initially sweet and juicy, it becomes more hollow down the palate, lacking genuine ripeness and vivaciousness.
Sweet, minty and menthol-like aromas of small black and red berries backed by creamy, chocolatey, cedary oak precede an intense, rather jammy and old-fashioned palate whose slightly hollow presence of small dark berries and plums is supported by a measured, dusty spine before finishing with rather an assertive acidity. Lacks genuine elegance and charm.
Polished and elegant, this sweetly fruited blend has a heady, slightly minty and menthol-like bouquet of cassis, redcurrants and sweet plums backed by fresh cedar/vanilla oak. ItÕs luscious and finely honed, with a plush, evenly ripened but faintly baked presence of minty plum and berry knit with fresh pine needle-like oak and framed by smooth, pliant tannins.
Sweetly fruited and jammy, with juicy flavours of black and red berries, dark plums a minty note of eucalypt knit with polished oak and supported by fine, crunchy tannins.
